Went to the Auctions yesterday at Manheim Fowles and got the young bloke an XR6 ute, 6 speed manual in Velocity ( same colour as the mustang ) for his first car. Some cheap cars we noticed

Payout from the insurer was $121,000 !!! Damn.
I mean there is always a good reason why they go cheap but $3k for an AU XR8 is crazy, some with the VE; even for the driveline its a pretty good price if you have a kit car or something.

The tub has a minor bit of damage. Has new yokohama tyres on it to. Interior is like brand new. Has ute liner as well. We watched a 2003 BA XR6 turbo ute go thru in the next lane, it was auto , 143,000ks, sounded good but apparantley had engine problems. We thought it would go cheap but it got up to $13,800 and was referred to the insurance company. You can't pick 'em........

Even four or five year old cars aren really worth much at the auctions,
I think we're all just used to accepting the dealer prices on lots as normal.... |

I would love to hit the auctions with 10k, pick up something damaged and turn it into a track car. BA II turbo manual for under 10k with a bit of damage?? Done deal! It's not like I wouldn't damage it on the track again anyway!

It is incredible what goes thru the ringers at auctions...
but at the end of the day (particularly with insurance cars) they just want SOMETHING for them... why hold on to them?? Providing you're willing to put in a bit of time and effort into fixing them up... theres no reason you can't buy a bargain... Mate of mine bought an BAII Futura with 250,000km on it for $2000.00 the other day... sure - its done some kays... but it actually drove quite well... and you see plenty of cabs with 600-700km on the clock... no reason that with good maintenance and a bit of TLC - this one might last forever too!!!!

That AU3 XR8 above would make a great donar for a track car for example.

I've been watching the Manheim-Fowles website trying to find when my EL Ghia will be going through. No luck yet though.
Also been keeping an eye on things like this to pluck the motor from for a swap into my AU. How likely is it though that a motor has been badly damaged in this sort of crash? http://www.manheimfowles.com.au/find...rm=view_detail Also says this is a repairable write-off but I can't see any damage? http://www.manheimfowles.com.au/find...rm=view_detail |

Thats what i dont like about Fowles, they dont list the damage.
It could be anything at all from undercarriage damage, blown engine/gearbox, stolen/recovered, simply missing the VIV stickers - who knows. As for your question about the first ute and if the engine would be damaged, in that sort of crash, the engine itself should still be OK. the Intercooler and piping might be damaged but that isnt really an important part (easily replaced and of little value) |

Light damage at the front. Only a crease on the bonnet. Don't know if the airbags went off or not. That seems to be where all the dollars go. You have to watch Pickles to. Went down in February to bid on a 2006 Mercedes Sprinter van advertised with 39,000ks. Turned out being 475,000 ks..........
