For quite some time I have been looking at the possibility of getting a wireless printer or a print server/router. I used to have Vista Premium on the desktop, Vista on 1 laptop, and windows 7 on the other laptop.
Whenever we needed to print work out from either laptop we would save the file to usb flash drive and print from the desktop computer as that is where the printer is. Now that we have upgraded to windows 7 on the desktop and both laptops. It prompted us to set up a home group. Now, providing the desktop and printer is turned on, we can press print from either laptop and it will send the job to the printer on the desktop. (I am not saying this was not possible with Vista or XP, just the fact that Windows 7 pretty much did it for you in a way a lay person can understand and work out is impressive & that my way of solving the issue was going to be a new peice of hardware)

Yeah, was easy enough to set up in XP and Vista. Go to the printers andright click on it and select sharing from the menu, click on share this printer and away you go.
Great that Windows 7 walks you through it though. That will make things a lot easier for as you've put it, a lay person.

The main benefit of win 7 it that it is not a resource hog like vista. it actually performs better on low spec machines than XP, a new OS less demanding than it's predecessor is a first for Microsoft
maybe they are finally getting the message

Vista seems like a rush job OS released to make a quick buck or something?
Microsoft 7 is what Vista should have been imo. |

I never bothered with Vista, was well versed with XP and stuck to it.
Until I was given Windows 7. I couldn't go back now, I love it.

XP is a 10-year old platform.
I have some things that crash in XP due to hardware difficulties (my hardware is above spec for the program). Reading the forums, the problems are non-existent in Windows 7. I shall be getting it soon myself.

Having just had to buy a new tower on Thursday, and finding Windows 7 took about five minutes to get used to, figured it out with no dramas.
I have to say, though, that if you are tired of all the dramas with Microsoft Office programmes (Word, Excel etc), give OpenOffice.org a go. I've just installed it, and it's almost identical. Freeware too, just dowload off the internet. And no, I'm not affiliated with them, but 100 million downloaders can't be wrong Shazz

i loved my Win 7 , have been using since pre release as a tester..
but yesterday it started and tried to do a system restore..is now stuck in a constant loop trying to restore..reboots and process starts again...seems to have corrupted some sys files...damn..i have all my data there...time to pull out hard drive and see if i can access said data through a caddy .. other than that...i like win 7 , seems much faster that Xp /Vista and (before yesterday) more stable

Word of advice there GTJOHN. Next time, partition your disk in to two drives, C: and D:. Install Windows on C: and save all your data on D:. That way, if your OS goes belly up, you can easily reinstall it without having to worry about your data.

One thing I like about windows 7, and I like it all really. Its has NEVER - NOT ONCE - crashed or frozen for me. And I was even part of the team using the Beta test version a year ago..

Sorry to dig up an old(ish) thread but how the hell do you get old games to run on 7.
With XP there was a section in the help files that made older games run, but I've found nothing like that in 7!!

I run xp vista was crap no interest in 7.
Haven't used Linux recently but I prefered that to most windows versions but a pita most time but I love osx I sold my iMac for only a few hundred less than I paid for it almost 2 years on and never had an issue but wAnted the 27" as soon as I saw it. I don't think it's ever been off nor had any issues. And they now have some grunt under the hood not that you really need as much as windows demands |
