Car to buy for 6+ people

Hi fellas...

After finding out that we are having a new edition to the family in 8 months, Im forced to sell our AU to accommodate the family.

I would appreciate some suggestions on what you can buy for around $10000 that comfortably holds 2 adults, 3 kids, and a baby.

Ive always had sedans and never thought that one day I would be forced to buy a ''nana mover''. So I have no idea where to start.

A friend suggested a Tarago - which I know nothing about - and some Kia thing. Ive also been told you can buy a Falcon wagon which has 2 seats in the boot. I have never heard of this and wouldn't think it would be too comfortable.

stretch the budget and go for a honda odessey, bloody fantastci vehicle, puts anything in its class to shame on reliability aswell as build quality. servicing can be a little steep depending on the service but repairs are not as frequent as a tarago or kia equivilant (especially the kia).

get yourself an 8 seat landcruiser ,prado or diesel pajero ,..built tough & very reliable dont buy a kia carnival they are rubbish

There heaps of cars your just going to be limited to around models of the late 90's or high ks .

Just buy a normal car and put the rest in the boot... that's what I do.

What ever you do, do not buy an early Kia Carnival. They are known for their engine failures. As above if you are looking for a 7 seat people mover I would suggest a Honda Odeysey. Other notable suggestions would be a Mitsubishi Nimbus or Toyota Tarago. Otherwise check out the 7 seat SUV/4x4s.

My sisters have a Tarago and a Chrysler Voyager. Both are happy with their vehicles, however they aren't car people and I have never driven them. The Voyager seems very well equiped.

go the tarago. my brother has one and they are fantastic on the juice. barely 10L/100km round town. he bought it in qld and we both drove it home and i was surprised at how well it drove. you don't feel like you are driving a van as the drivers seat isn't above the wheels like most are.

Put a bench seat in your AU, or do it to a wagon.

Hell for less than $10k you could get a BF Wagon and have a bench seat installed. $10k Tarago would be pretty old and high mileage.

Go for the Odyssey or a Hino bus,that way you can charge them at the door and feel good that you made a good decision.

we've had a kia carnival since new, great car, lots of room, comfortable, dunno what is with some1 saying their engines like to blow up ours hasnt shown any problems and we use it a hell of a lot, even for towing lol

Depends what age it is I think the newer ones dont have the engine issue. If you got an older one, go open the bonnet and have a look in radiator overflow tank. Most likely a nice milkshake in there.

The problem with those big people carrier things, is that most use cheapo materials inside. The Kia is one of the worse, although the Grand Carnival is a little better over the original but both better than a Zafira. Id stay away and stretch to a 4by of sorts. You also dont have to get in every day and wonder what your life has come down to now that your driving an ugly boring people mover.

Buy a tarago with a shagged engine and fit a 1UZFE or a newer one ie - 3UZFE.
Sleeper city, room to have a game of touch footy and capacity for any more additions!

Thats what I was going to do if we had a fourth child.

Be careful with the AWD Taragos ... shaft from the transfer case to the front diffs eventually fail ... and they are bloody expensive.

Finding a $10K 7-seater Territory is going to be hard ... even in 8 months time.

The Odyssey is probably going to be the best bet ... although they slacked off with the middle row seat with a lap belt only for the centre only though.

My inlaw's have just purchased a Chrysler Voyager grand ??, 2nd hand, I went for a drive in it around town, V6 it seemed like it liked the juice a little according to the readout 14+ avg, but it was the 1st week they had it so not really sure on that, it has lot's of creature comfort's that's for sure.

Friends bought a Mitsubishi Grandis for about $10k less than an equivalent spec/age Odyssey. They seem to be an unknown quantity as this one had been sitting in the dealers yard for a few months even though it was spotless and well priced.

They're very happy with it, and still have a couple of years of factory warranty to run.

Correct the early ones had the head of the v6 in them under the fire wall and because of this they are prone to blowing head gaskets

the later models were designed different ant dont have the issue

I hired a Carnival in QLD not so long ago and it was great,3.8lt V6 5spd auto and HEAPS of room The thing had heaps of power and would light up the tyres with ease.
My neighbour has just got one the same and they love it.They traded their Mazda MPV 7 seater and the Carnival kills it for room.

Grandis were quite underrated. Always scored well against the competition but never seems to sell that much. Bullet proof reliability and not a bad drive for a people mover.
I would get one of these,Tarago or an Odyssey if you want to spend the extra coin. Steer clear of the older Carnivals and Zafira.

4WDs are an option too. Could get a 2000 NM Pajero for about 10k. Gives you something to take offroad if you ever wanted and drive much nicer on the road than a Landcruiser or Patrol. Think the Territories would be a bit expensive atm.

My parents previously had an EBII wagon with a 3rd row seat (3 in the back) making it an 8 seater. It was a fantastic car but the back seat was more for kids. Once we started to hit our teens, we basically outgrew it. For children it was great though!

My suggestion is a Mitubishi Delica series 2 and beyond, 7-8 seater, 4x4 (its an actual 4by), can get in diesel or v6 ulp, acres of room, lwb has a better-than-your-average van boot, also can get in high roof with plenty of goodies. All for around 10K+.
Its a whole lot of car for that sorta money i reckon.

I frequently see 6+ people in a fully sick VS Calais cruisin Chapel St.
But, yes, I'd go for the Territory if they do come down to your price bracket by the time the little one arrives

Definatley suggest a Nimbus or Grandis, solid cars. I would never buy a Toyota second-hand - too much Toyota Tax.
