About 6 months ago I got a fine for not wearing a helmet on a bicycle. I was livid, only in Nanny-State-Australia could they fine you for that. Who am I hurting except potentially myself by not wearing a helmet?? Then a friend asked what I thought about seatbelt laws. Didn't have a good answer for that one....
As for the USA, they're big on civil liberties, and I admire them for that. But it seems some people just put their safety at risk trying to prove a point. Compulsory seatbelt use is spreading though, when I was there a few months ago I saw plenty of the "click it or ticket" campaign. Some states dont even require motorbike riders to wear a helmet.... |

Well that was the point of my post, they are the same kind of laws but I never made the connection before actually getting fined. (and after calming down) After that episode I always wear a helmet.
Just like the older generation didn't want to know about compulsory seatbelts when the laws first came in, but now the vast majority of people take for granted that they must be worn - its a cultural thing. Having said all that, no other country has adopted the compulsory bike helmet laws and dont look like doing so any time soon, unlike the rapid spread of seat belt laws which were also pioneered in Victoria/Australia. |

I use a helmet now. I tell my 9 year old to wear his when his riding his bike or scooter because it will help protect his head. I've already replace 1 helmet from him coming off his scooter and bike a couple of times. Last time he went head first into the letter box when his wheel got caight between the footpath and the lawn.

Seat belt laws generally make the occupants of the car safer, but there is plenty of evidence that they place an increased risk on both pedestrians and cyclists.

The risk of head injury as a pedestrian is very similar to that of a bicyclist and the number of motorists that sustain serious brain injuries makes the number of cyclist who obtain serious brain injuries seem almost insignificant. |

the tv once asked Peter Brock "should everyday car drivers wear a helmet?". his response was 'No, they are terribly uncomfortable and restrict your vision'. He should know, he wore one every week racing.
