I went to the Lakeside track day yesterday, (good day of racing), but got stuck behind a copper all the way from the bridge to the turnoff. I think his speedo was out of calibration () as he seemed to be sitting on 110-115k all the way, but interesting thing was it was a fully liveried ute. I have never seen a police ute in all my years on the road. Are they common, and what are they used for?

I've only ever seen undercover police utes.
Have seen the dog squad ones however none with just a tray or tub. |

Just a soft cover, and no unusual graphics, so I assume it's nothing promotional either.

About a year ago i was traveling south from Caboolture on the Bruce Hwy following this black late model Holden ute, we where passed by a jappa sports bike that was clearly speeding, all of a sudden red and blue lights are flashing in the utes rear window followed by the siren then he was off....
Sure enough, 4 or 5 kays up the road the ute has the bike pulled over, with a uniformed having a chat with the rider.... Note to self, all black late model Holden utes are suspect....

A few of them in SA. They use them to load up 'stuff' they find at your house.

I'm able to pick them fairly well these days, however there was one down the Gold Coast, big YAMAHA sticker across the back window and tint so dark it made Barry White look like he needed a tan.
He pulled up a number of people over the two or three months that I saw it around.

In SA, saw a police BF3 station wagon with roof racks and 2 ladders attached to the roof. Looked more like a telstra van than a police car. What are they used for?

There have been numerous police utes in SEQ for a while now, all unmarked highway patrol, latest I've seen is a FG XR6 turbo ute in EGO, there have been SS/XR8 utes in the past with UNIT stickers on the rear window.

In that case, no, I've never seen a police ute adorned in the full police regalia. Would look pretty cool I'd reckon yeah?

We have the utes over here in nz that drive around with ladders attached, they go around servicing the speed cameras that are on fixed poles, and are also used a lot at the truck weigh stations checking out trucks.

I've seen one around Brisbane. Usual police stickers and lights and it was raised higher than standard (what is that option, maybe outback pack).

There was a fully decaled and lighted FG XR6 ute doing highway oversized escorts out Moree way earlier this year.

I'd really like to see pictures of one of these utes, I've NEVER seen one but the question is, well, why not? They'd be even cooler with a huge QLD / whichever state Police logo emblazoned on the tonneau..
Off topic, but one way to spot undercover cars that works well on the later models in their bright greens or purples, if following the car (i.e. approaching from behind at some speed on the freeway) is to look out for little 'black' rectangles about the size and shape of a box of matches either side of the licence plate, in it's top right+left hand corners. I'm not saying every undercover car has that, but every car with that is an undercover car. But now cars are being fitted out with mobile speed cameras that will ping you up to (in good conditions) a kilometre approaching or moving away from the cop car, and once closer will automatically scan your licence plate to match it against a database stolen, defected, and unregistered cars within .4 of a second if I recall correctly. |

Yes they are photos of the old VY utes, but that is what they look like. Just imagine a white VE ute looking like that.
