Changing The Millage Numbers

Hi All

i have a v6 essex capri.and its on the way to be completed thank god for that...phewwwwwww
iam working around the interior part now and i like to move all the millage numbers to 0000000 cause its a new motor and all ..
does anyone know how to do it .or is there specail people to do this work .....iam in brisbane if that helps ...
and now i know whys it has been not going strait at all its stuck on 666982 the first three numbers specks for it slelf ..

You can dismantle the tumbler assembly from inside the speedo housing and then manipulate the wheels manually to place them anywhere you please. It's fiddly but patience and perserverance will see you through. Sorry I can't be specific on details of how to disassemble as it has been probably over 30 years since I did one. Just start undoing all the little screws on the back of the housing till it comes apart.

there is a place on Evans road @ Salisbury/Moorooka that reco all types of guages and can reset the odo to 0000 and supply a Qld Dept. of Trans worthy letter to validate the original miles and work completed.

I had my whole Xt cluster re-done by them and the workmanship was worth every cent...

I got another cluster on ebay for my TF Cortina.

I tried to move the tumblers but it ended up a mess.

You may have more luck ;-)

hi all

just like to keep you all posted .i gave it a go my self and it worked i pulled apart from the back and then took the tumbler out and spun them around to ..0000000 ..
i hope its ok to do that .now i just read i need to take the old numbers down for main roads ...
i am confussed on this matter
iam i going to get into trouble for what i have done

Being serious for a moment, and putting my bush lawyer hat on, I'd say that it is not on.

‘Tampering with odometers
‘59A.(1) A person must not tamper with a motor vehicle’s odometer
with intent to falsely represent that, at a particular time, the vehicle had not
travelled more than a specified distance.
Maximum penalty—100 penalty units.
‘(2) If a court finds a person guilty of an offence against subsection (1),
the court may, on its own initiative or on the application of a person who
has suffered loss, order the person who committed the offence to
compensate for loss resulting from the commission of the offence.
‘(3) In any proceeding, the distance shown at any time on the odometer
tampered with is evidence of a false representation by the person who
tampered with the odometer that the vehicle had not travelled more than the
distance shown on the odometer.
‘(4) Subsection (2) does not limit a court’s powers under the Penalties
and Sentences Act 1992 or any other law.

You tell them you bought a NOS speedo because yours ceased working. You tell them the old reading and tell them you dumped the speedo into the bin months ago because you didn't know you had to keep it (if asked). They will possibly give you a certificate with the old mileage on it that you have to keep with the car in case it is ever sold.

+1 for good advice... the motor might have 0000 on it, a full resto for example but as far as Qld Transport is concerned the car will have alway done xxxxx klms...

You want to keep the odo @ 000 in line with the mechanical compontents but not seem like you are selling an 'only on Sunday to church' seventies buggy with no milegae on the chassis..

Be up front and truthfull, your speedo gear had stopped, you had to get a new unit but you know the car has done "x" klms and Qld transport will verify it.

PS they already know by backtracking the rego and any RWC's if you whip a few thou off it :P

You will notice the words INTENT TO FALSELY MISREPRESENT are used.

If you amend another speedo to your original mileage on your car then your intention is NOT to falsely misrepresent.

That'll be $20 ;-)

What Cav said.

You adjusted the speedo without any intention to mislead anyone as to how many km's are on the car. If you ever sell it someday, tell them it's been around the clock 3 times or something, and that you reset the odometer when you rebuilt the car. That's not misleading anyone.

Anyone trying to prosecute you would have to be able to prove your intent to mislead someone, and I think they'd have a hard time.

So how then does he expalin that it's done 333018km (or is it miles) while being off the road for repairs since the last rego?

I'm not sure about who holds what odometer readings, so I can't comment on that. I would have thought that, given the age of the car, most people would assume it's done a few miles. It's not like he's trying to make out that the car is an original low mileage example or anything.

I'm not sure what you'd do in his situation, perhaps if he had to put the old reading back on he could request a copy of the last rego papers from QLD roads.

Do you remember the old odometer reading Gerry?

Has anyone ever swapped a faulty speedo/instrument cluster and had any subsequent issues when getting new registration?

Also how are they going to know how many k's are on it since the last rego? In QLD you do not have to declare odometer readings when renewing registration, QLD transport have no idea how many K's are on my cars, they have not seen the Mini in at least 4 years.

I think the point here is as long as you do not try to deceive a buyer when you sell it and you keep a record of the true kms you will not have an issue. It will only become an issue if a buyer is told that it is a low km car and then they find out otherwise and lodge a complaint, then you are in a lot of hot water.

Do you have the original owners manual, why not record the date and reading of the change to the mileage on that?
