Default Can cars be bought from NZ?

With our dollar leading the NZ Dollar by a mile, there are some awesome bargains on the NZ market. What's the go with importing a car from NZ?

Check with authorities here..
Things have changed when I imported a Subaru in 2000..
You require an off load certificate and be able to have car certified here..
If it was made here in the first place it would be certified..
Depending on age of vehicle etc different rules apply..
Commonwealth laws override state laws..
My WRX was a "personal import", I spent 3 months in NZ to qualify...
Payed what it cost me all up with GST payed here.. Check though these rules change all the time.. Freight from Tauranga to Sydney was $1200...

My how the times of changed

I remember in the late 70's and 80's it worked in reverse. Cars were far cheaper in Australia compared to NZ - so much so that many Kiwis often took their cars home with them after living in Oz for 6 months

Case in point : I sold my 1973 XA Fairmont 302 hardtop in New Zealand for NZ$10,000 in 1985. Converted my cash to AUD and got AUD$7,500. Moved to Australia and bought a 1977 Fairmont GXL 5.8L for AUD$3,800 - so had AUD$3,700 left over.

Mate bought a 1980 XD Ghia 5.8L brand new in Australia for around $11,000 at the time . Moved to NZ and sold it there 2 years later for NZ$18,000
