Default Engine Mounts

Ok so there has been a couple of threads about Engine mounts on a mk2 focus, but I am wondering how you can tell if you have a faulty one and what the effects are on the performance of the car, either handeling or out right performance..

Cheers
Festec

well, you will know because the driving experience is seriously messed up

eg. when you accelerate the engine moves a bit before the power goes to the wheels and the opposite when braking. that is if they're broken.

if it's a mount that is starting to crack or become loose then the symptoms may be there but to a lesser degree but excessive vibration when revving etc

our cars don't have that much power but cars with torque like the XR5 or diesel might be more prone to it. i know that with the mazda MPS (which is similar to the focus in many ways) broken engine mounts are a very common problem

Is there and real way of telling, like some sort of test I can do, the reason why I am asking is because sometimes when I take off there is a creeking noise and the same when I come of the gas, but its not all the time and mainly at low speeds. It's not very loud so it may do it more than I think and or can hear.

Cheers
Adrian

by the sound of ur description, it sounds the same as when mine broke. I had my mechanic check though as I was hoping it was under warranty. quiet an expensive bit to replace, cost me about $350 iirc

Casa, which one actually broke?

Festec, I have the same issue as you. Haven't really worried about it too much...always thought it was an engine mount or one of the CVs on the way out.

Ok could a faulty engine mount affect the way the car handles as well????
The reason why I am asking is I am having a issue with the handeling, its a weird feeling that when you throw the car side to side it's like the car handles it but the engine or something is moving and makes the car all unsetteled, As I said it's really hard to explain..... I know it's not the suspension as that is all new...

One way to check is to have foot on brake and load up engine in forward and reverse gears and take note of what the engine does, may need someone else to do it while you watch or vice versa. engine will move more than usuall. harder to tell with the ones at either end on engine/trans but you can get i light and look for signs of cracking in the rubber. This can be done while engine is loaded up.
with an auto it may clunk on gear changes, manual too but you feed power on softer in a manual(between shifts are longer).
Bit of a ramble I know!!!

Ok update,

Took the car to Ford and guess what they are F'ing useless, apparently could not hear a thing (ie the creaking) and apparently the car handles perfect to them, yea right and then they slugged me $120....

Now the car has started do something even more unusal, at spped on the motor way it feels like it is rocking from side to side its like its wobbeling, it's very very loose, any ideas on what this may be??????

I'd either go to Pedders for a 28 point check, or put it in to an independent mechanic to check the engine mounts.

whats the creaking noise? how and when does it happen
engine mounts dont usually creak, more of a thump on gear changes. handling not usually effected.

creaking can sometimes be heard during parking? had this once was drive shafts moving in hub, the fix was loctite drive shafts in hub(dealer fix).

have you had the ball joints looked at if the go dry they will creak, also the sway bar links as to the tie rod ends.
one way to find it is to put small hole in boot(joint boot) and spray CRC with tube into joint, do one at a time.
These are things that can effect handling.
