i'm gunna say the original audi quattro. everyone wrote it off becasue AWD was to heavy. proved em wrong and blitzed everything. and another rally car, the lancia stratos. weird looking and it fell apart after 10 minutes of idling but it went like a shower of ******. and finally an aussie touring car, the xy phase 3 gt-ho 351.

True they used to race there as part of the tasman series. A tru street circuit with a pub on the corner that you could watch the race from, a railway crossing that during practice you had to wait for trains & a rickety wooden bridge heres a pic of Allan Moffat in his lotus cortina on the wooden bridge I bet the guy who left those skidmarks on the bridge wernt the only skidmarks he left that day |

The group B rally cars, of the late 80's are pure automotive porn. Audi Quattro being most memorable.
Also big fan of Ford sierra as in last of watchable touring cars. All of porsches racing machinery, ever manufactured.

Thunderbolts, the start of Fords "Total Performance" era.
So many cars already mentioned here, Formula 1's ground effects cars and AJ's Williams. |

This is a myth, the GTRs success coincided with the demise of Group A racing, despite what rice boys like to believe. It's not really a favourite, but worth a mention, the BMW E30 M3, most successful touring car to date. I'm a fan of the F5000 series which seems to have had a revival lately, covered by AMC quite often, will be seeing these race early next year http://www.f5000.co.nz/ |

Good timing with this thread anybody watch Speed last night ? had the History of Motorsport be it F1/Can Am/Indy/Le Mans etcetc....
It was fantastic though have seen similar before - great to watch young Colin Chapman evolve then Black Jack coming his own with the Repco Brahbam. Early Monaco that Hill owned ala Senna and then watching the great Jim Clarke. Tasman Series at Warwick Farm - Lakeside etc and then the series over the ditch supported by McLaren,Hill Stewart Gardner etc Then the attempts by Chapman at Indy early days followed by Shelby Gurney at LeMans showing the awesum efforts by the GT40's ! If you can have cable I highly recommend seeing it if replayed sooner or later.

(also - is that the fuel cap - right behind the drivers head?? hope there was no spillages!!!) I mean seriously... nothing close to the technology & safety of today... so dangerous... its incredible... It was just pure heart-in-mouth brass-balls racing... I suppose we can thank those of yester-year for some of the pleasures we enjoy today with regards to racing, safety, and design. Those were the days...

yep loftie wild days they were eh - Fangio used to fly in those silver arrows and lap the field unbelieveable....
Re - safety - I think it was Jackie Stewart who started the track/equipment safety movement.

Duesenbergs would have to be up there. 110 Mph in 1915 was not an easy task.
