Hi all. I am going to buy an XR8 daily driver tomorrow.. Im getting a 2002 AU III XR8 Sedan with all the good bits, manual, low klms etc etc..
What I didnt expect was the insurance side of things to be a bit of a mission.. I have my XYGT currently insured with Shannons and had my past FPV, a 2007 Boss 302 Manual GT-P with Ryno.. Shannons have been real easy to deal with and apart from their price being a bit dearer for the XY GT than I can get elsewhere, I have stuck with them as they have been real good with agreed values and the one time for a month where I had to use the XY as a daily.. Ryno were fine also with the GT-P, bar having to really twist their arms on the agreed value amount. But RYNO will NOT insure XR's either 6's or 8's. They only do the T series cars and FPV's.. Lumley SV were also a total waste of time as they dont wanna know about anything like this.. Their man on the phone sucked, his attitude was shocking. Iv rung around, done some online quotes etc and been quite shocked at the cost of the policies for these XR8's.. Ranging from high 600's to around 1k depending on the company insuring.. Now I have a good driving record, full protected rating 1 on both cars, no traffic violations history in the last 5 yrs, cars always garaged overnite. I live on the Gold Coast, Im nearly 40 yrs old an the only driver etc etc, and I still get these amounts.. My XY costs me $600 a year and is insured for over 60k.. So, what are other people with XR's doing as insurance alternatives?? Surely for a 10-15k (insured value) car the premiums cant be this bad.. SUGGESTIONS????

I've just insured a series two through AAMI. 26 year old male, nothing bad to my name for $820 with unlimited hire car. Only thing I don't like about them is no choice of repairer but wasn't prepared to pay what others were asking for this option.

24yr old Male, this is my 3rd XR8 (2nd AU3) and I am paying under $900 a year through NRMA full comp.
I was with Shannons for my previous 2 but as has been discussed on here numerous times before, when they got bought out by Suncorp they seemed to stop actually giving a damn about enthusiasts and became 'just another' insurance company. They wanted more to insure my AU3 XR8 than the FG XR8 I had before it. I actually put that down to parts though because getting good parts for the AU's now is a bit difficult depending on what you are chasing.

Just car $1088, Agreed value of $22,400 on a 2005 XR8 ute.
When I first got the ute they were the only company willing to insure me for a reasonable price, I've had 1 speeding fine, 0 claims, accidents or incidents at 22yo. Excess was huge a couple years ago, but has fallen into a much more reasonable price recently. |

I think we pay around $8-900 a year with NRMA, for a BA XR8 with mods. Agreed value. I'm 36, rating 1 for life, garaged Brisbane Southside (Runcorn). Can't remember the exact figures, but I hope that helps.

AAMI gave me $666 for the year, I didnt wanna know about NRMA, Alianz was $850, Budget Direct was $728, YOUI was a total waste of time, they must have a real stingy underwriting company, Just Cars was the least competative at $969. Didnt try RACQ, even tho Im a long term club member.. Didnt try Suncorp either.
One of my criteria is I want FULL choice of repairer, an most of the run of the mill joints dont give you FULL choice, they get the final say in repairer or like with AAMI you have to go to who they assign. Shannons did came in for me at around $700 for daily driver or $590 on limited use, with agreed value set at what I paid for the car. I may ring them back in the morning an see if I can get a bit more $$ agreed value as Im getting the car for a pretty good price compared to what Iv seen advertised. Plus I get a bit more off the other car for having a multi vehicle policy.. I was just hoping there would be more choices out there.. All that said so far, the guys at Shannons have been pretty good from day 1 that Iv had the XY.. They have never given me any greif about the agreed value on that car every renewal and this year around they wanted to up the value, not drop it.. Not bad considering the flat market today.. Thanks for all the replies so far guys..

Donny - persist with shannons - before the T3 I had my previous AU111XR8 with them at a good rate but was a while ago - the thing I find with shannons that if you keep persisting/ringing most times you end up with someone on the other side more willing to satisfy your needs compared to the previous days call.
Anyway congrats the daily has finally been found.

My TS50 T3 and EFII XR8 are insured with RYNO. Far better than Shannons

I asked Ryno today if they would insure the XR8, and they straight out said NO.
They said the Underwriters accept T series cars and FPV's etc, but will not accept XR's unless you have 5 or so plus cars with them and they make an exception..

I only have the TS & XR with Ryno.
I do go through a broker. This may be the difference. The XR is very tidy and RYNO have insured it for $ 18500.00

Mmmm, the broker may be the key.. I had a broker here a few years back, but they only dealt with the mainstream places, so that wasnt much help to me, so I ended up doing it all myself..

Another recommendation to go through a broker here.
Last week I got a letter from my current insurer that at the end of my current policy they were no longer going to cover me, as I'm under 30. This place used to specialise in ONLY young people with cars no one else would touch, and were pretty reasonable (I bought my XR at 21 - I'm 27 now). Then they got bought out, changed name and underwriters, and now they have wiped everyone under 30 from their books, regardless of the car they drive, or their driving history. Looked around at a few places, and most wouldn't touch me in that car. Just Car wanted $1900+ per year, $1700 if I bumped up the excess, even though I've only had 2 fines, and no claims. I work full time as a bus driver, and am an accepted driver on the company policy, so the boss rang the broker we use, who contacted our fleet insurer, and they were happy to cover my car - with mods, and me as driver for $700/year. I have been paying ~$1200/year since I bought it. I drag 12 tonnes of bus around all day 5 days a week, with 60 kids on board, and doing that, they consider I pose minimal threat to anyone. Yet when I get into my own car, I'm a menace to society!

Who are some good brokers to try out?
With lots of mods it can be difficult with insurance as choice is limited by who will insure you. I'm currently with Shannons. They are fine with lots of mods, big and small, listed.

I went with Shannons for now.. I picked up the car today and needed somthing sorted then and there..
Im just on pay by the month for both cars on a combined policy, so I have the flexibility to pick n choose diffrent places anytime I like really.. So the plan will be to look at it all again after the silly season has been and gone.. It would probly be beneficial to list a few of these decent brokers if those who are using them feel ok to do that.. Anyone else considering insurance with similar vehicles should find such info very handy.. Im just still a bit stunned that a normal XR could cost this much to insure.. My GT-P cost marginally more an it was a 50k insured car. And I am baffled trying to figure out the logic with how a 27 year old female with a not far off bog stock XR6 with a few basic mods could be such an insurance risk..

price wise i have always found aami to be the cheapest and least hassle to deal with when making a claim
I have had very bad experiences with NRMA and Allianz I had a commy years ago that was insured for $34k a taxi driver decided to destroy it and nrma in their wsidom refused to write it off even though the cost of repairs was $28k i even said to them just give me the $28k anyway i had a **** fiight to get them to fix it properly and after $40k of their cash a few grand of mine i ended up with a farked car that was crap to drive and leaked water compare this with AAMI who gave me the choice of having the car written off or repaired saying that the car was borderline and left the choice to me they did not even give me grief about the lowered suspension that stood out like dogs balls being all yellow which i had not told them about. both accidents were not my fault in the later one my back got hurt a bit and the lady's compulsory injury insurance was with allianz they were stinger than NRMA i did not get all the money back for medical expenses and no pain and suffering compo whatsoever the NSW state govt has made the green slip insurance the most profitable in the world as legally they don't really have to pay out now lose a finger its worth $1000 even if you are totally paralysed from the neck down max compo is $250K now nothing can compensate you for that sort of injury but at the very least it should be enough so you can afford accommodating and medical care for the rest of your days. And you cant even take them to court because if the judge does go against the grain and award you something he is going against legislation and if you lose you have to pay the insurances legal expenses which can go into the millions. Thanks Bob Carr you vego P#%ck sorry for the rant anyway to sum it up stay clear of NRMA and Allianz at all costs AAMI is great for hassle free claims in my experience i had a spate of ppl hitting me over a few years when i was on the road doing 200kms+ a day and they do allow you to choose your own repairer BUT their ppl must quote also and your repairer quote must be in the same ballpark as the other quotes.

I stayed away from NRMA because a mate of mine who owns a smash repairs shop told me that of all the insurance companies he deals with NRMA are the most difficult of the lot..
They are the worst for cutting back repair quotes, and making shops use second hand parts etc.. We all know the assessors (that come to the shops) come around and look at the car and then the quote and then chop n change things a bit, trim a bit of the fat and knock a few hours labour off if they think its a bit loaded.. He said the NRMA people were the worst with this, and would pretty much cut the quote to the bone with virtually no profit margin for the shop, insist on chasing second hand parts, and then take the longest to actually pay the panel shop for the job. He said a few of their payments were out to 90 days on jobs, and smaller places cannot afford that, its not very fair on them, an theres no point working for no profit at all. So, he wont do NRMA work now..
