I'm in the market for a 4wd single or extra cab ute for work.
Am I expecting too much from so little? Is $5000 enough for something reliable and if so, what? Looking on carsales.com is suggesting it's not... Help!

Plenty about under $7k, check ebay (seem to be saying that a lot these days..). You'll find plenty of Tritons, Couriers, Hilux, Navara, Cruiser etc that should go close to $5k.
You may have to travel to get one though :( |

It all depends on what age kms your looking for but most of the "newer" ones go from the 7-10k range. Here is a couple I found under 5 but I dont know if you want tray back or not.
1994 Courier 1998 Navara Should be able to knock that down a bit 1995 Triton |

just make sure you see the car and the owner as well as the usual revs check before falking over your hard earned as theres a lot of scammers around right now particularly on gumtree and carsales.

Decent patrol GQ utes for 5K
Youll be looking for a good while for that one Hiluxs are about the same issue The popular makes/models will always command more Youll have to drop down from the populars to get near your budget The best value truck in your budget would be the MQ/MK range patrol ute Even the turbo diesel in these command this figure Mite get a real good early 80s Nissan 720 4x4 ute Great if ya take ya cut lunch with ya,wont get anywhere in a hurry but will get there |

2.6 Courier would be your best bet for that price range.
You have to spend 10k to get something decent. (reasnoable and decent are two different things) I have a 98 Hilux 4x4 Dual cab 2.7EFI that only owes me 4k. Will be for sale for 8k in a few weeks. |

Be careful of 2.8L diesels in Hilux 4X4's. They need their oil and filter changed every 5,000km and it usually doesn't happen. Know a few blokes that have done a bearing or worse in the not so mighty 2.8L. My nephew is on his 3rd motor in his Hilux and it wasn't the orginal motor in the truck when he bought it 2 1/2 years ago (He's a slow learner!). Needless to say the nephew is now changing his oil religiously!

the 1996-98 navara's move at turtle speed but, they're super erliable. we had one here as a work/farm ute. we didn't change the oil for 40,000 km's, never flushed the radiator, never changed brake, diff, gearbox or clutch fluids. it was only a farm ute but it just kept going. the body didn't even line up on the chassis in the end.

Does it need to be 4x4?
Are you just after clearance, or genuine go anywhere ability? (soggy building sites etc.) I picked up a very tidy (i mean immaculate) 95 Courier dual cab 2.6efi 2wd with 160k,s late last year for $4k. Its a buyers market so haggle like mad! |

Do you know anyone who works for a company who turns over a lot of fleet vehicles?
A mate got a 2005 or 6 GU Patrol ute for 6k. Couldn't believe it. It's a 4.2 TD DX with about 140,000km. It was one of their field service units and is in really good nick. Came without a tray, but for 6k, who's complaining?! |

Any 2nd hand car for $5k or less with 10+ years age will be a gamble. My sisters 2003-4 Audi A4 has just had $3k spent on it for lots of minor stuff and it is still not right.. |
