Floods cause delay in Queensland car licence plates and put breaks on sales
Paul Donoughue From: The Sunday Mail (Qld) February 20, 2011 12:00AM THE floods have delivered Queensland car dealers a double blow, with licence plates running low as the natural disaster sullies demand for new cars. Sales of new cars in Queensland in January are 12 per cent down on the same time last year, according to the Bureau of Statistics, which blamed the floods for the slide. Dealers are running low on number plates after the machine that manufactures them was damaged when 1.3m of water washed through the Wacol factory. A replacement machine from Germany is weeks away. One Brisbane car salesman said dealerships had already started laying off casual workers because they cannot shift stock without licence plates. "There are dealerships that do not have any plates so they can't register them. It is very worrying," said another major Brisbane dealer. A spokesman for the Department of Transport said dealers had been notified of the problem and the issue had since been cleared up. He said the state was not in danger of running out of number plates. But dealers maintain the problem is ongoing, over a month after the floods. Sales of personalised plates have been suspended.

Gee im sure the last time i registered a car ,and no plates were avaliable at the local main roads, i got a sticker that had to be affixed to the windscreen
The car gets assigned the next avaliable plate prefix, and this is recorded against the car So you dont need plates for it to be driven on the road ,this way I drove around for near on a week like this and all legit Only 12% drop in new sales, im sure itll get worse than that |

Well why do we need plates anyway?
If someone does the wrong thing the copper can check the sticker on the window. |

State Gov at it's best....but these days no plates doesn't work as speed camera revenue might be down for a while.

They must be the same company that do the plates for PPQ. My sister recently had to get replacement personalised plates after one was stolen, and she was told it could take up to 6 weeks for them to arrive as the company that makes them were flooded out.
Also. Just a quick rant.. I really wish people (including the stupid media as well) would stop calling them licence plates. WE are NOT in the US. They are called number plates (or registration plates). Ok. end of

I actually had this happen to me once.
bought a car from a caryard late on a friday afternoon which had come over from NSW and therefore had no plates. It needed a regency ID check etc. but they couldnt get it in before the following Monday. I didnt have a problem with that, although i was living a few hundred k's away and it meant another trip down, but just as we were discussing things a bloke walks in and enquires about my trade in. The car was already in the yard and so the salesman said it was for sale as is, the guy said he'd take it and all was good, however, i still needed it to get back home, the salesman had no other cars i could take as most were ex interstaters or out of reg and the guy buying my car wanted it there and then. Anyway, the salesman calls motor reg and enquires about a permit for the car using its old rego number, which they didnt have the plates for, and then tells me its ok to drive it without plates aslong as i have a permit. He ducks down to the local DMV and gets a permit, sticks it on the car and sends me on my way. Next day im pulled over by the cops and told it is not on and must trailer the car from where it is. On the Monday i let fly at the salesman and handed him a reciept for the trailer and fuel costs to get it moved to which he reluctantly agreed to pay in full, i then hit him up for a full tank of juice to prevent me from making a complaint to DMV. |
