I suspect it may end in tears.

Get a tune for your car for 95RON as well as the 98. You can switch it as often as you like.

I used to have factory, 95, 98 & "really silly" settings in the flasher for my BA2 F6 so if I got caught in the mulga with the wrong fuel available I could set it accordingly.

How the crap can a servo not sell 98, when it IS a manufacturers requirement for some vehicles. Sounds like madness to me!

You can get octane tablets to add to a tank of regular unleaded.
http://www.dynotab.com/45432.html
Looks like you may be able to buy them on line. Or back to Perth (or other major city) for a 91 tune. No reason it can't be done, but you may (will) lose some power.

My dad just move back from Port Headland because he hated it and it cost something like $8 for a loaf of bread.
I'd hate to see how much 98 fuel would cost other there. $3 a litre probably!!

What are fuel prices really like over there?

99% of the cars in Headland are diesel Hilux/Prado/Landcruiser. The other 0.5% are Patrols. The remaining 0.475% are wicked vans and finally there is one car that needs 98.

it might be whorth your while talking to the servo owner, the servo at home doesn't sell premium, and oneday i was talking to him as he wanted to know why i was putting octane booster in my fuel tank, anyway long story short he told me that, the under ground tank was filled with premium because of fuel goes stale, and by law he has to fill his tanks with premium so when the fuel goes stale it is the same octane as normal unleaded. And now i know what day's to fill my tank

I lived in Karratha (100 km short of PH) and bread was no where near $8 a loaf.

Stuff is expensive up there, but that is because all the workers for HI and Dampier Salt are on six figure salaries for unskilled labour (skilled labour gets even more).

Not quite sure why PH does not have 98, Karratha did.

By the way, not all the cars are diesel 4wd's although about half are, there are some cars up there that would blow your mind.

My old man got back from there last week. He quit because he hated the place.
Ill have to double check what he was paying, but Pretty sure it was close to $1000 a week to rent a 3 bedroom house. Obviously you go 3rds in the rent though!

Gecko, mate I think your a bit off the mark with the expense of groceries etc.
Its not due to the wages those blokes get....its..."FREIGHT" the cost of getting the goods up there.

I 'know I lived in the in the Territory for 16yrs.

Our rent was $1500 a week for a 4 bedroom, his was cheap.

As for freight being the only reason, I am not so sure about that. What I do know was groceries was more than in Perth but a $2 loaf of bread in Perth was not $8 in Karratha. I will concede that groceries were more expensive, about $100/week more for a 3 person family, that is why defence personnel got a zone allowance and nurses get paid more too.

Anyway, a bit off topic.

I have heard some stores have 2 prices for every product. A 'Locals' price and a "mine workers" price, which was quite a lot more.

I just found out my dads joint cost $1800 per week for a 3 bedroom POS

I ttuned the F6 for 95 fuel when I went on my norwest trip with my mates. There's no 98 available north of Carnarvon via the coast road and Capricorn Roadhouse (near Newman) has 98 but nothing available further north. Broome doesn't have 98 either but Roebuck Bay of all places sell Ultimate 98, which is some 580kms north of Port Hedland.
