We had one time that a servo who had decided that they didn't like a particular bank and refused to accept any cards from that bank. They wouldn't let us leave collateral and go and find an atm (there was no atm in the servo). There was no signage that they were not accepting cards from this particular bank. This I find abhorrent, needless to say we've never gone there again for petrol.

Yah we are, even 10/15c, if they seem genuine. Regular customers who buy cigrattes and such that are going for $10.05 I let em go with. I spose it helps that i don't have to count 5 c pieces after my shift, there' no point.

Generally the scum who steal petrol don't bother to come in and try to talk their way out of it... they just run.

I currently work at BP. We don't experience many drive offs, but we do get a lot of people coming in with the old, oh, did my card just decline, it shouldn't of, i have money in there. I am sick of it. Some people say that we aren't allowed to take anything off u but your wrong. We take anything we can get, i have even made a guy take a head unit out of his car because he said he had nothing to leave. Tools, spare wheels, stereo's CD's, phones and lots lots more are sitting in our servo, because they don't bother to come back. Funny thing is, they will kick up a stink because we are taking something off them, but they never come back for it.
Just the other day i went through 300 non payments not drive offs, but non payments, where we have there details, and that was only in the past 2 years that my boss has owned this site!!!

You think this is bad, I just found at that at certain stores when it's a busy time, people come in and try on shoes, swap their old cruddy ones for the new ones, put them in the box, and walk out in a new pair of shoes. Amazing what some people will do.

People will try to steal whatever they can.

At work we have lists of people that are not to have refunds given to them.
They come into one store, steal a bunch of stuff, then go elsewhere and try to get refunds.

One time I saw a woman pick up a reciept from outside our store, read it, then go in and get all the things on the list.

I knew she was either going to try to pretend it was hers, already paid for, but that she forgot something and came back in, or she was going to say she didn't need them anymore and wanted a refund.

She went for the refund, I told the store manager and she was escorted from the store.

Scumbags are everywhere, a friend of mine used to work at a servo on the federal highway, they get a few driveoffs every week. My friend happened to be working when some moron in a black supra filled up with premium and sodded off. No respect.

Either way, it's us, the honest ones that suffer! Either by paying more, or inconvenience.

Didn't have enough in my card to pay for the fuel once, so I called my stepmum and she did a transfer online to my card, so I walked back in and was able to pay straight away! (it was ANZ to ANZ - instantaneus transfers)

Work in a servo for an hour or 2, you soon learn what people are like. The site i work at isn't busy at all, anywhere from 45-70 people an hour. She was right tho, it is an offence. Depending on the person (dealing with so many you tend to be able to judge quickly wether they are genuine or not) I just try and keep it quiet, i know how bad i'd feel if i had someone yelling at me infront of other customers.

Cheap AU: The station i'm at is only open 16 hours a day, it has not been robbed while open once. We've had two break in since i've been there (2 years) since those we have had security shutters put up and the cigarette shelves locked down with 5mm thick steel plates. The old site my boss worked at was robbed a couple of times, knives/gun/syringe... all the ones he can recall have occured during the darker hours.

Depends on the area really. Around here servos get held up on a regular basis, generally not more then 2 months between one getting held up. Usually at night or during the early morning hours while it's fairly quiet, and weapons involved range from knives right through to handguns and shotguns. I was lucky, while I was working in the servo near me, I didn't get held up, but everyone else who worked there was in the time I was there.

As long as you do what they demand, you should be ok, but if it's something that really worries you, I suggest not considering it as a line of work.

You have no legal rights to demand anything. If people want to give it then more the power to them. The one time I had the card decline because Mrs XA took money out and I didn't know I was still in the force. I was wondering how they wanted to deal with it as they weren't getting a thing from me as collateral. I let them go through the spiel and then they said they had a form to fill out and wanted ID. I laughed and got a funny look .. until I took out my ID and explained that they were doing the only thing they were legally entitled to do.
The first person that thinks they can get something from me they aren't legally entitled to will be wasting their time. Best they don't think they have the right to physically detain me.

the more the fuel prices go up the more likely fuel stealing will happen..

only thing petrol stations can do is enforce PRE PAY for fuel that in itself would be costly and too hard to manage and thus why petrol stealing will continue..

ppl stealing shouldnt be punishing servo's they get jack crap outta fuel as it is its the goverment and petrol refineries they should vent their displeasure at..

I thought that was odd, so I looked at the rego and there was the plate number (i've got reasonable eyesight) and then went in to pay.... 3 people in the queue so it took a little while... next thing the attended jumped out and ran into the filling area... but the guy was driving off.

I told the attendant the rego from the sticker and he was so very grateful as they stole about $70 of premium. Two days later I was there again (getting a drink) and the same attendant was on duty. I asked if they got the guy, and he said yes, the police found them around the corner and did them for theft using a motor vehicle, driving without plates (caught on camera proof), and eventually driving an unroadworthy vehicle.

We both had a laugh. :
Their pay is docked but many do not notify the police till the end of their shift and many try to report petrol drive offs when in fact the person filling up approached them, gave id, and stated they couldn't pay. Not an offence. Just the silly way the petrol stations do business. Petrol drive offs are on the rise. Most offenders just steal rego plates and before they are listed as stolen they fill up. Most petrol station cameras are designed to focus on plates, not drivers filling up, so are inadequate. Obviously theft of number plates is on the rise also. I know that this Saturday the Brimbank council is offering free anti tamper screws for rego plates at Brimbank Central, Watergardens and possibly Keilor Plaza. My understanding is that between 1000 and 1400 you can get your plates fixed on. Not a bad ideal. To ultimately deal with petrol drive offs service stations must go to a prepay system, or something similiar to USA with credit cards.

Cool, where did you hear about that? Might just have to take the XF and the EB down to the local shopping center this coming Saturday by the sounds of it!
