US legislation introduced in 2007 requires car-makers to achieve a CAFE of 35 miles per US gallon (6.7 litres per 100km) by 2010.

Commodore’s range of V6 and V8 powerplants currently produce combined fuel economy ranging from 9.1L/100km to 12.9L/100km.
A V6 will never make this figure, let alone an 8. It's all to do with REVS.
Revs = more fuel usage. A V config needs more revs to do what a inline does.

I know there has been this arguement before, but Diesels have better fuel economy, the main reason is they have Torque at lower Revs, and max out around 3500rpm.

I know why they persist with the V config, albeit a space saver, but maybe they all go front wheel drives with East-West engines?
LOL has anyone done a front wheel drive inline 8cyl? (probably been done back in the 50's?)

But they're supporting it. And they're bringing it back.

Just goes to show the difference in Bias of non American made products when it comes to GM and Ford.
