A note to all pet owners

thought id put this up here as most people around have pets.

In the past year i have called the pound on 4 dogs that i have found strayed, 3 near my work on a very busy country road, and 1 saturday nite near my gf's house.
none of these 4 dogs had any ID at all so i rang the council and had them picked up, to avoid getting hit and hopefully get back to their owners.

the reason i call the council is that 2 years ago i watched a jack russell get killed right infront of me because it got out and hit by a car. also that i hope someone would do the same for me if my dog got out.

for the sake of $15 go to a key maker, or ingraver or the vet, get a tag and put the pets name and 2 contact numbers on it and avoid
1: loosing your best friend
2: having to pay massive vet bills because they got hit, hurt
3: dealing with the council and lost dogs home fees
4: worrying or having your kids missing there pet.

Better still get a microchip, that way if any scumbag thieves your dog you can prove it is yours if found. Collars can come off/be removed.

The amount of stray dogs here in Townsville is just beyond a joke.
On average I see at least one dog a day walking the streets, some with collars, some without.
The RSPCA here is simply swamped with dumped dogs.
Supposedly "mans best friend".... god help us if thats how we treat our friends!

My local council will not allow registration without the dog being chipped, this is not the case elsewhere i assume?

For the cost of a microchip and registration your crazy not to do it!

micro-chipping is mandatory where i am,
but im not talking about that. i cant look at a dog walking the street and see its lost and look at its microchip to see who they are.
a collar can be taken off, but most dogs will have them on. what im suggesting is to buy a tag to hang off the collar as a form of on the spot identification, so that someone could contact you to say i have your dog, rather than the council saying i have your dog, your going to be fined.

My dogs don't have collars because they chew each others off, but they are micro chipped in case I leave the gate open.

mine have their ears tattoo'd back in the day a lot of "decent" breeders would tattoo their kennel name on a pups ear.

but good point get them micro-chipped..

buying a dog is gaining a best mate, only more loyal

yeh it is a good idea to have them micro chiped

Here in Geelong it is a bylaw that you have to have your dog or cat microchiped

it worked for us as one of our cats wandered off and got cought in a trap about 3ks from home and taken to the animal shelterand got a call $30 later and we had him home

My German Shepherd has his breeders ID tattoo'd in his ear.

Im pretty sure it's law in NSW to have a micro chip. I don't even think your allowed to even advertise a dog for sale without one either.

I've often thought about a microchip for my budgie, but I think the chip will be bigger than my budgie. I guess I could always use zip ties. ))

yep, cats & dogs must be microchipped
what i dont understand is that if my dog wanders outside my yard Im the worlds biggest criminal, yet cat owners seem to expect that their pets can wander about the neighbourhood scaring birds and jumping on cars

ok...i dont think my message is getting through to people but good to see people are doing the right thing

im not talking about micro chipping (im assuming it is mandatory eveywhere going by peoples responses, which was what i assumed from the start. and before anyone says, i know never assume)
im talking about hanging a tag off your dogs collar with a name and number like this tag

so that YOU the owner can be contacted if you dog is found, at no cost to you. Rather than go through the stress of dealing with pounds, councils ect. Who if your animal hasnt been desexed may do it before the dog is released (unless proof of a breeding dog can be provided)

very good idea, my cat is microchiped plus she has her name engraved on a tag plus where she lives ,plus my mobile Number on her tag.

Yours do that too? I thought mine were just crazy...I have resolved to buy new collars (and separate the dogs)...

My boy found his way about three k's away from where my parents were staying - I only found out because the woman rang the numbers on the tag. Saved my parents from having to give me some terrible news...

Yes Sezzy, my 2 dogs are stupid, I can't even put the rego discs on their chains as they chew them off too, these 2 are that silly they empty and chew their water buckets and then go without water for the rest of the day until we get home and top it up again, I bought them a kennel a few months ago, cost me close to $500, I affectionately called it the 'Dogmahal' as it was a pretty awesome kennel with a sliding window and a flap over the door so it was sealed from the elements but the 2 ratbags decided the wanted a breeze inside and chewed away one wall, well never again these 2 are getting anything like that. They have cost me more in the last year and a half than I have spent on my cars. I keep threatening to leave the gate open but they probably wouldn't want to leave their life of luxury with us.

Micro chips are fine for dogs who get out and are found by decent people. My mates staffy got out and was never seen again, he had a chip.
I'd say whoever found him didnt go anywhere near the council or a vet but instead fell in love with his new friend.

But if you come across your dog at a later date a chip will help your cause no end.

I knew of someone who also had a Stafford stolen, they came across it by chance and basically had to steal it back as it wasn't chipped and they could not prove it was theirs (conclusively).

I chipped my dog long before it became compulsory.

I Microchip every puppy I breed and they are registered in my name as the breeder. We are not allowed to transfer them - the new owners have to but I keep the record and if the dog is ever found in the future and they contact me - I know who they belong to.

Collars are a terrific idea for pets and there are some good collars you can buy now that are harder to chew off. Leather is useless - awful when wet and other dogs chew them. The very thick nylon ones are the best.

Had a very close call a months or so back, our 2 dogs got out since they can be a pair of douches lol, upon arrival the big one was hanging around the street (we live in a cul de sac) but instantly ran over to my car as I was pulling up (thanks to him for the scratches on the door). There was no sign of the little one (who had no collar on since we washed him the previous night) anywhere which is when I started fearing the worst. Misses is in tears on the street at this stage, luckily our neighbour across the street saw them out and managed to lure the little one in their house until we got home. If it wasn't for them only God knows what could have happened (the big one has been out before once, ended up stealing everyones shoes they left on their doorsteps and bringing them over to our front yard proceeding to chew them up for most of the day). That was enough for us to make sure they never remain without their collars and ID tags at any time
