Default Gearing for street and strip

Hey all,

I'm looking for advice on which diff ratio to go with that will have my XE ute very streetable (city and highway) and still be able to break into the 10's.

The setup so far is a C6 (2.46/1.46/1), 2200rpm hi-stall, 9" LSD 3:1, 275/60/15's and engine RPM @ 6000 (max). From memory the ute is around 3300lbs.

I want to be able to keep engine revs at or under 2500rpm on the highway, using simple online calculators I can do with 3.5:1 ratio's but will I be able to get out of the hole quick enough to get into the 10's?

. 2200rpm convertor + 3.5's wont do it . You might get away with the 3.5's on a short tyre , 25-26 inch slick , but you would be needing at least 3500-4000rpm convertor to really punch out of the whole .

What power is the car making ? Aspirated or F/I ? Torque figures @ rpm ?

Thanks dieseltrain - yeah 28's are a bit of an ask - don't want to go too high with the converter, it needs to be streetable... and not break!

Motor is about to get new heads, cam, manifold - with hopes of around 500-550hp and a mountain of torque.

I agree with the above - your stall is too low and the diff ratio wrong for that kind of time down the strip. You are asking for the best of both worlds (street and strip), and it is unlikely to happen. You might want to look at a bit of NOS to get you out of the hole quicker and into the right rev range. A 100hp shot should be enough

Yeah, I've definitely taken on-board the advice above. Will be looking at a 3000 stall to start with, and going a smaller strip tyre.

A gear vendors overdrive unit is another option I'm considering...

Turbo + Big Block = , easy

Mate of mine just finished his TT 426 wedge motor in his XB coupe . Makes a measly 500rwhp @ 10psi @ only 5500rpm . Motor will be retuned on 20psi and revved to 6500rpm once its got a few more km's on it ...

Talk about TORQUE monster though !!! Crazy !

Recently ran 10.91 @ 130 with 3000 stall, 3.89's and 28in tyres. crossing the line at 6200rpm in a 3900lb car.

My street Capri has a 2800 rpm convertor, C4 auto, 24.5 tyre and 3.5 diff head crosses the line at just on six thousand rpm, best time 11.07, 120 mph. 350 rear wheel horsepower. It weighs approx 1170kgs though.
Streetability was paramount.
We could up the power but do not wish to put a roll cage in.
