Been staying at Altona while in Melbourne for a working stint and lately have been seeing cars with wheel clamps on them parked in carparks along the Esplanade. They have Police stickers on them, also saw an unmarked white Camry with a couple of the fuzz putting them on a van. Also seen a new Honda and a VN with them on.
Anyone have any ideas why? Makes me a bit suss on parking my car in those parks overnight, should I be? |

Most probably the sheriff clamping cars for outstanding fines.

You must be able to buy wheel clamps for personal use, as i see plenty of people using them to secure camper trailers and vans in inner city brisbane.

That is the sheriff clamping wheels, they stick big stickers on the windscreen and drivers side window. It for outstanding fines and warrants. They drive white Camrys.

+1 Definately Sheriff, not police. Victorian Sheriff's uniform and crest/insignia are extremely hard to tell apart from police at a distance.
Unless you have unpaid fines in Victoria, I wouldnt worry.... |

I think the fine is about $6,000 if you damage one trying to remove it :\

I'm not in Vic (anymore), but when I was doing a job for the Dept of Justice at the Coroners Court, you'd often see the Sheriff come rolling down at 2pm or there abouts clamping peoples cars in Londsdale St, just down from the Magistrates Court obviously catching the offenders while they are in at hearings and the like... |
