Cool Not quite a barn find

Hi all
well today I looked at an XF for sale
I want some parts for my Mustang
the guy there had what I would call a Falstang
we all saw the HQ Holden/Mustang cross a while back
well this was similar
it was an XP Falcon with a fast back and Mustang tail lights
I will try and get back there to see it a bit closer and maybe some pics
he was a bit hard to understand
but I think it is for sale
he had a paddock full of Fords and other cars
hopefully during the week I will get to see it again

Are you sure it wasn't that weird BA XR6 with the XL/XM front and rear quarters?

Nope... it had an old mustang tail lights and what looked like fabricated rear panels (shelby style rear spoiler) all grafted onto the rear end of an XM/P era coupe....

Cool Re: Not quite a barn find

Well guys
I went back there tonight
cant get any pics as the whole car
is covered in rubbish
from what I can see
its definitely an XP Falcon
not a coupe as the doors look too short
he tells me it has a V8 and 4 speed
the rear has rust coming through
and the rear window which is not a hatch back
is made of perspex
and there is a half size boot lid maybe a foot long
the Mustang lights are fitted
into the XP Light holes very poor positioning
looks very home made if you know what I mean
it also has orange lights below the
Mustang ones for the blinkers
He tells me it was made in South Australia
for a Ford dealer not sure a dealer
would like something that looks home made
anyway its not for me
and hes talking around $5k
but it belongs to his brother in law
and has to get the OK to sell it
If I can find out more I will
let every one know
thanks John

Was it red?If so,it sounds like a car I saw in an old magazine back in the 80s (Street & Custom or something like that).I will have it somewhere and will try to find it.

I think I found it.Issue 2 of Street and Custom Magazine (April/June 1984) has a story on what sounds like this car.
It was a 1970's custom car called the Delta and was built by a guy in Brisbane. It started out as an XL Falcon sedan and was basically hand built. It had lengthened doors,a perspex rear window and a Valiant slant 6 motor with Torqueflite gearbox. It was unearthed in Port Macquarie at that time and then disappeared again.Pics in the magazine taken at that time show the car in red paint with gold between the tail lights and also the 2 round orange lights below the Mustang tail lights.
The car also has a rear window louvre and has the NSW number plates LRB983 and a tow bar.
If it's the car it would probably be a rare and maybe valuable part of Australia's custom car history.
Apparently there was also an article on the car in an old magazine called Australian Hot Rodding Review.

I was thinkin it could possibly be the delta , myself
But depending on its current condition and the asking price
It could be worth following thru for a proper inspection and tracing its authenticity
Or , it could be a rusted out hulk worthy of no more than scrap value

Some of the old customs were made to last , some had more filler/bog than a bog factory, misaligned panels ,and very bad engineering
Although its great we preserve our rodding history ,sometimes its just as easy to let mother nature take their toll

Well it looks like we have found the Delta
the doors are the same with the strange extentions
the colour is a darker red
but those doors definitely
and he did say that the doors didnt use a key
maybe an early central locking system
I didnt get a phone number
and as I said hes very hard to understand
with the language barrier its hard to get
the gist of his brother in law owning it
for the language just think Hot bread kitchen
or post office
or Chinese takaway
thanks John

Spot on.
The only difference from original appears to be the wheels and it originally had 3 fingered chrome trim in the side coves like a 1966 Mustang.
The car was featured in the October 1970 issue of Australian Hot Rodding Review and was a multiple trophy winner at the time.

In the Street & Custom article from 1984 there are 3 pics, two show the car parked beside a big shed and the third shows the engine bay. There is what looks like a canvas awning sitting on the roof of the car with a tyre sitting on top of it.
The Valiant motor had also been replaced with a Falcon six.
The article says that the current owner at the time wanted $800 for it and it was in reasonable condition with not much rust. The magazine editor who did the story was apparently quite keen on buying the car but was beaten to it because he was in Sydney and couldn't get to Port Macquarie in time.
Apparently the owner was selling it because he bought it sight unseen after being told it was a Mustang and when he realised it wasn't a Mustang he cracked it and put it up for sale.
