Has anyone been through this process of re-registering a repairable write off?

Dd you pass first time?

If not...what did they pick on?

Am interested in peoples' experiences if available.

The VIV is to ensure the repairs have been done to original specification I believe.

Not to be confused with a RWC.

More than likely they will ask you for proof of use of manufacturer's 'repair procedure'
They will also measure all dimensions for 'trueness' of repair.

It's $500 for the inspection, so wouldn't mind knowing exactly what they focus on.

The Vic roads website info talks in very general terms about making sure its not stolen etc, but for 500 bucks and the whole day they must do more than just that?

They inspect the damage that was repaired to see if it is repaired properly.
You should take all receipts with you as well for the parts that were used and receipts from the person/company that did the repair.
They also check the identity of the vehicle too to make sure it isnt rebirthed or repaired using stolen parts.
If you've fixed it legitimately, you've got nothing to worry about.

Here's the first tip .

get an SRS report from your dealer, if its had a frontal hit and you havent got the report they send you away to get one.

the word i hear is, apparently they are very very strict on structural repairs, the slightest out of tolerance the vehicle gets rejected, unless it was an easy repairer i would`nt even try.

yeah... 3mm is the tolerance in victoria.

Well I know much more about the VIV process...it passed first time!

I straightened out the bent chassis rail with a porta pak kit, (Alltools had them on sale for $199, (but it wasn't dented real bad mind you just 10 mil).
Paid a panel beater to spray a guard,bonnet and bumper bar black.
Bought a new grill myself, it came black, just clipped it in.
Paid the panel shop $300 to put it on a car-o-liner and give me a printout, they gave it a little 2mm shake as well to bring it to better shape.

Bought the wreck at Pickles for 2500 bucks, got it home and there was an invoice in the boot for $8900 (a new engine, exhaust,injectors,etc) just 12 months earlier...fuel contamination repairs done by insurance co....

I had to fix it after seeing that.

A few things I have learnt...

It it's had a hit at the front you will need your local dealer to give you an SRS airbag report....they warned me about that, but its not written anywhere, you just fail the test and have to pay the rebooking fee.

Get a roadworthy first...cheaper than failing the VIV and then having to get the roadworthy afterwards anyway.

tell the roadworthy guy all the things you wouldn't tell the VIV guy

(see if it really matters)

My guy was extremely helpful for the 88 dollars I spent on the roadworthy.

Get lots of photos and type up a diary of the things you did, fit the bonnet, bought a headlight, screwed on the grill etc
It isn't as detailed as it makes out.

Wash the car...dunno if it matters but it would to me.

If your car looks complete and you have the receipts you have no problems.

Took 4 hrs for them to "test" the car...7 days booking time.

Now here's the groaning part...

Roadworthy $88 but not good enough so it needs an engineer to give a
VIV $530 but not good enough when you go to register it so
"High Risk" $40 VicRoads registration inspection fee but to do all this
Permit $78 for 28 days to be able to drive it to all these places

Of course that doesn't get it registered....

We have the plates, the registration and the good old stamp duty.

so add another $900 I said its only worth $1k cause its a write off and who in their mind would buy a write off?

VicRoads therefore rape you to the tune of about $1600.

IF YOU PASS FIRST TIME.

The red highlighted area says that the VIV database will be amended to say its been repaired/restored/checked satisfactorily.

Anyway...i hope this info helps answer questions to someone else brave enough to buy a repairable write off "bargain"....
