Default Rear Jack Points?!?

Hey everyone,

I'm a little concerned about my AU... Jacking her up at the front (which I've done countless times) always goes off without a hitch.

But everytime I jack up the rear wheels, I do incredible amounts of damage to the section that would be considered the jack point.... The folded bit of metal under the side-skits just twists and crumples under the weight - and I feel rather foolish for asking this but.... am I perhaps doing something wrong?

I'm just very concerned because if this keeps up, I will be unable to safely jack the rear end up at all (which could be frustrating should I need to change a tyre...)

At first I thought it was because of the type of hydraulic jack I was using (which is somewhat flat faced) but it doesn't bother the front of the vehicle at all... Not to mention makes safety stands useless...

Any ideas? Am I missing something totally obvious?? :

the body joints are only for the factory jack that comes with the car. if it's live axle, i usually use where the lower control arm connects to the body to jack with a normal hydraulic jack. i'm not sure what's there on irs ones, but it's pretty much inline with the jacking point you are currently using, just further to the middle of the car...does that make sense?

If you are using a trolley jack and not the cantilever jack that the car came with you should be using the chassis rails and not the jacking points along the outer rail seams as you described. use a rubber block along the chassis rails and you wont have any problems. But using the outer seams, of course you will crush them, as they werent designed to support the vehicles weight under a flat jacking plate.

Just using it on the rear jack point worked fine on the other cars I've owned.... never even thought that it would be different on the AU!!

Oh well, atleast I now know!! :

sorry to dig up an old thread but where are the chassis rails on an au? so i can use my hydraulic jack as i have a live axle and ive only ever used the original jacking points also why are au's so crap when it comes to jacking that they bend?

just get rid of your crap AU and you won't need to worry - they tell me Camrys jack pretty easy. LOL.

Seriously though if you have a beam axle the best rear jacking point is always your diff - with IRS you can get in from the side just in front of the rear wheel and jack under the mount of the lower arm.

No, BHDOGS is right. The Jacking points do bend when you use a hoist or other kind of jack.
Just inside the jacking point you should be able to see the chassis rails.

yes, but why choose that over the lower control arm where bodes-sh describes?
I've done bodes-sh's method with a hydraulic jack on over 50 falcons.

Stick your head under, just inside the jacking point. It's pretty obvious.

Sorry to bring this thread up again, but I cant for the life of me work out where to safely place car stands underneath my AU.

The rear seems easy enough, jack up where lower arm bolts to body & place stand on the diff.

But the front seems to have no level surface anywhere whatsoever.

A million thanks mate. And youve run into no issues whatsoever putting it there? Inluding while working around the hub (ie: brakes, balljoints, etc)?
