Not to mention a catering company was told it wasnt needed this weekend.... Still waiting for an answer to a question about how the union hijacked Qantas... and which union, as 4 Unions are involved in a dispute (as opposed to a strike).

You seem to be confused with a lot of people supporting Qantas against the unions sabotaging the company which is costing it $15m per week! If the Unions (who are supposed to be truly representing the Qantas employees.....not just looking out for their own self interested reasons), were really concerned with their members well-being, why have they been sabotaging Qantas' business which is costing the company $15m per week??? Do you really think that Qantas was created for the sole purpose of creating income for Union members and Union heirarchy? NO - it was to create a profit and return on investment for the shareholders! It is incredible to think in this day and age that Unions (and some of their indoctrinated members) continue to have the view that their Employers "owe" them a living. In a globalised economy where capital flows more freely than ever before between countries, institutions and people, each and every company must generate reasonable returns for their shareholders, otherwise they will take their money elsewhere! It is no longer the 1900's where protectionism reigned supreme. The sooner the Unions and the ALP realise this, then we will all be better off. |

Maybe Qantas could have struck a deal under the negoiation process.
Maybe they dont want to and are using the ''union bogey men'' as a tool to achieve a grand strategic plan. You seem to think workers should have no right to negoiate wages and conditions simply take what the employers offer. We are all consumers and if we cant spend because of inadequate income the whhels are going to fall off and are starting to globally. |

Unions, and their actions can have that effect on many people. I am sending this message from Midura. *I was in Melbourne this morning when we found out that all means of getting back to Adelaide had evaporated over night. All other flights, hire cars ,trains and buses were booked out. I managed to catch a rural flight to Mildura and are being collected by a family member for the trip home. Despite *the inconvenience I think that Qantas have done what was needed to bring the matter to a head.*I just hope or everybody's sake it works. I want jobs to stay in Australia like the next person but the current environment makes this an impossible task at times for many Australian companies, small and large, that need to remain globally competitive. After all is said and done, regardless of the outcome, I think it would be naive for anyone to think that *Qantas will want to continue to grow and expand it's local workforce. If it can't do this in a sustainable manner without the constant threat of strike action it will have to look abroad or consider outsourcing where possible.

I’ve got a few ideas you might like. Perhaps Qantas should start paying their workers, you know, the ones who actually do the work, in pesos instead of dollars, that’ll help the company. When the carbon tax comes in, they can deduct 500 pesos a week from every blue collar worker to contribute to the tax, that will help them stay in Australia. Qantas could print their own food stamps so their “great unwashed” blue collar workers can actually buy something at the local supermarket because the old Peso doesn’t buy a lot over here. Even better, Qantas could import a NEW workforce from a country that actually uses pesos, that way the new workforce will look up to Joyce like a new Messiah. You can submit those ideas to the board but if they use them, I want 5000 Qantas shares or 10,000 pesos, whatever has the greatest value as payment.

I'm yet to hear anyone offer a strategy to help Qantas compete with Virgin while giving into the union demands... Bottom line is unless they find ways to reduce operating costs they might as well sell the planes to Branson.
Qantas really have no choice if they want to remain viable. |

What do I do to make this clearer?
If you personally attack another member you WILL be warned. And for those who are sitting just inside the T&C trying to bait others into lashing out I am aware and watching as are other mods. I do not care if you are pro or anti the union or management or your views agree or disagree with mine. There are rules, my job is to enforce them and to this point I have been very lenient but that time is coming to an end.... |

I see there are a number of reports that Qantas have also locked out any staff that are on union agreements even though they aren't involved in industrial action.
Surely this is illegal ? |

There is only one alternative for us, no amount of indepth analysis of who is wrong or right will solve this problem, Time to sit back and see what happens. I personally hope Quantas stays here and everyone gets a fair deal. Unlikely outcome but let's wait n see

Whilst of interest to a lot of the members here (myself included) I think we are best leaving off on this discussion, and return to Ford related threads.
There are plenty of other forums where people can argue the rights or wrongs of what is happening with Qantas, unions, or whatever other various politically sensitive type subject your heart desires. Let's get the focus, back onto Ford, and other auto related topics. |
