Default Sh**tbox Rally

I thought I would tell you guys about the Sh**tbox Rally we went in in May this year. We have signed up for the 2012 rally which will leave next year from Melbourne on the 14 April. We will then head north-west to Wentworth for our first night. We’re really hitting the dust as we head north up through Tibooburra, Innamincka, Windorah and Winton. We will then spend out last night of the rally in Undara before we hit the tropics and finish the rally in Cairns on Friday 20th April.

Fisrt of all a little background. The rally raises money for the Cancer Council, this year 109 cars entered and we raised about $700,000. Each entrant has to raise at least $4000 and donate it to the cancer council via Everyday hero. You then have to buy a car which cannot cost any more than $1000 including everything. We then travel over some pretty rough and rugged country in these cars and have an absolute ball doing it. At the end of the auction you can either buy your car back or it gets auctioned off, with the proceeds going to the Cancer Council.

My reason for doing the rally is that I lost my brother Pete to melanoma cancer in 2009, 4 months after being diagnosed. Most entrants in the rally have a similar story.

This year we went in a 1983 Ford Telstar. We travelled from Brisbane, leaving from the Breakfast Creek Hotel, to darwin via the Gulf and in doing so covered nearly 4000km in the seven days. We had about 800km of dirt and seven river crossings. The little telstar made it with only a slight carburettor problem after one of the creek crossings which sorted itself out a few KM later.

Anyone who is interested in knowing more about the rally can go to www.shitboxrally.com.au and have a look.

Out team was called team 351 and we are hoping to do the rally in a more fitting vehicle next year, something like a V8 fairlane or something similar. We are still in the market for a car so if anyone knows of a suitable one please let me know. There is 180 cars in next years rally and they hope to raise 1 million dollars. If anyone is interested in donating to our team, donations can be made by visiting
http://www.everydayhero.com.au/team_351_5

All donations over $2 are fully tax deductable and an official Cancer Council receipt will be issued. Any company's who wish to donate or seek a sponsorship are also welcome to do so. Please PM me for details.

I have included a few photos from this years rally.

haha i've been down that track!! long un-fun day with a ute & camper tailer. hah

missed the fuel stop about half way through too little 'hut' in a paddock.

left kurrumba and got into borroloola running on vapours just on sunset.

water halfway up the doors through those creek crossings and on the last one we saw a bloke in a yellow ex vic taxi covered head to toe in mud(car too) just heading out.

I've got 3 work mates going next year in 2 cars. Looks like a great time.
I did the Variety Club bash back in 2008 from Melbourne to Yeppoon, that was good too.

BTW, drove that road (Savannah way) last year towing a caravan with a Pajero, great part of the country.

Have fun...

PS. I have the same photo of the last fuel too. Hells Gate Roadhouse. Gee the owner loved a chat...haha

I would also like to do this rally. Mainly because I reckon it'd be a bit of fun, and also I like the idea of raising money for the Cancer Counsil. My family hasn't been greatly affected by Cancer, though I did have a young cousin who passed away at 5 years old due to cancer.

The rally certainly looks like fun! One day I hope to do it.

Yeah, that Borroloola Road's a little ripper.......
I dragged numerous vehicles into "The 'Loo" that the road had killed.

While the basic Ford Six was code named Barra, the Turbo version clearly deserved its very own moniker – again enter Gordon Barfield.
We asked him if the engine had actually been called “Seagull” and how that came about.
“Actually it was just call “Gull”, because I named it that. Because we knew it was going to poo on everything”.

I think the owners of Hells Gate were a bit over it. Time for them to move on!!!!!!!!!!

I've included a couple of photos of what I called "Mayhem in the carpark"
We had half an hour to empty our cars ready for auction. The Telstar went for $60. I should have bought it back to use again next year.
