since putting short travel shocks in the rear to fix a bottoming out issue i have no noticed one of the rear tyres is scrubbing the guard on the rear.
It makes a pretty aweful sound when you hit a bump at 100ks and and rear end flexes. I can see on the tyre where it has worn a bit where it makes contact, i can also see on the guard where it has touched. I rolled the front guards a while back after they scrubbed but I never thought Id have an issue on the rear. Anyone else experienced this? Im thinking i might use a grinder to grind out the area thats fouling rather than rolling. |

by the way im running federal 595 tyres in 245/40/18, never had any scrubbing with the same size tyres in silverstones, the federals are obviously slightly bigger

I've got 275/35/19 Kumho's with Kings SSL on the back of my XR8 and had to grind a fair bit out where the metal guard meets the black plastic inner liner on the back of the wheel arch. I ended up parking the car diagonally on a steep driveway till I heard it touch, then I got out and marked where it hit with a felt pen. I used a thin cut-off wheel on a 4" grinder and cut a wedge out about 5mm wide on one edge and about 50mm long then neatened it up with a die grinder and painted the exposed metal. The die grinder worked well on the plastic inner guard as well.
You shouldn't have too much to grind away though as your tyres are a bit smaller than mine. |

Well... I got the grinder out and carefully cut out a section of each rear guard and using a brush primed the bare metal to prevent rusting.
No more scrubbing, a lot better over bumps on the fwy now ;) |

Does this happen often with AU's with 245's on the rear?

IRS might not be as bad because the top of the wheel will angle inwards as the suspension travels upward where as the live axle will stay straight if both sides are flexing equally as they generally will over a bump in the road.
