Mazda 3 MPS could be a good compromise between the raw agression of the WRX and the civilised nature of the GTi. Its almost a focus under the skin too, so you might get 2nd cousin status here LOL

I did like the 3 MPS when I drove it, except for the terrible torque steer under heavy acceleration.

One issue I have with my current Skoda now is a lack of traction when I feel as though I need it most ie; low grip situations, oily roads etc I feel as though the same issue will just be magnified in the 3 MPS with its 380nm of twist through the front wheels.

I figure that with the Golf GTi the problem wouldn't be any worse, and in the Subaru the issue would cease to exist.

I can honestly say from experience that the VW's are a nice car but the build quality on the later models leaves a lot to be desired. My son sold his 2010 MK6 GTI after only 5 months of ownership and build quality and his dislike of the DSG transmission were the main reasons he decided to sell so quickly. He now owns a new 2011 WRX sedan and is so much happier He has said himself that although it is not as fancy inside as the Golf the build quality and the AWD is absolutely amazing. The fuel economy is not as good as the GTI which was around 8.5 L/100 but he is still managing to average around 9.4 L / 100 with a combination of city/ hwy and spirited a lot of the time as well. He is actually having a new dump pipe fitted next week along with a custom tune which he has been advised will improve the economy as well. There are also a lot more after market parts available for the WRX and parts and servicing are also considerably cheaper than VW. In the end the decision is yours but having also driven both I can honestly say that the WRX feels more solid than the MK6 GTI did but the GTI is definitely more refined. The power and handling of the stock Rex is incredible and the AWD is magic in the wet when trying get out into busy traffic Take them both for a drive if you can and decide for yourself

Does it have to be a new car?

I don't know how you feel about Evo's, but you can pick up a 2008 or so Evo X MR (SST) or GSR (manual) with about 50,000kms on it for $40k. Probably won't quite get the 8.5L/100km you're after, but an infinitely better chassis and drive than either the GTi or WRX.

I would go the GTI for a fun drive every time. Some cars are just to easy to get into trouble with. There is only so much you need for the road in my view, while I say that I would like a little more power in my (unmodded XR6T) ride.

Ive got a demo wrx in my possession right now for another few days of evaluation, but so far I am leaning towards the wrx just because its a hoot every time I drive it..... Time will tell though

For those that are interested my average so far over another 220km round trip along the wet and slippery bells line of road and the gt western highway has been 8.2L/100km! Not bad at all hey?

8.2L/100km via the trip computer? See what the real fuel usage is before you get too excited, and remember the speedo is out too at anything above 60km/h, so you've probably only really done 200km, not 220km if you know what I mean.

What a load twaddle...

The speedo does read high (not just above 60 though), all Subaru's do, the odometer is accurate !

The trip computer will be as accurate as any other modern vehicle, my Forester is usually bang on (within +/- 3%).

Why post complete rubbish like that, I don't get it

Doesn't the odometer compute from the speedo? Modern Toyota's at least are out by 10% at 100km/h. New C Class Mercedes and a Lexus IS250 I've driven were the same, 10%. I'm just saying, even at 3% over a 220km drive you've only travelled 213.4km. If the trip computer doesn't compute from the speedo then disregard.

Must be a lot of highway k's or you drive really slow Or should I say 'extra urban' driving.

The Subaru quoted figures are
Combined 10.4
Urban 14.4
Extra Urban 8.1

I commute a Evo X MR with the twin clutch box in it going up and down the F3 and it wont even get close to that, it will run at around 10.Xl/100km.
If the trip computer is true than that's dam impressive but make sure you reset it before you start your next trip to be sure.

Often the trip computer will be inaccurate. Most newer cars trip computer always reads optimistic, i.e.; the trip computer will say you've done 10.5L/100km, but when you work it out via KMs / liters used, it's more like 11.3L/100km.

2 great cars, They both have pros and cons. Crossing from a euro car to a jap car or vise versa is a big change which ever you look at it. I did it myself, I had a jap car and made the switch and have been very happy with my VW, specially with the APR flash, it is a must! My next car will be another VW or something similar. If only the Focus was out with a cheaper ecoboost version, the ST will just be too expensive for me when it comes out. Why won't I go back to a Japanese car? Euro's interior are always nicer (you spend all your time inside the car, so I want a nice interior), the ride and comfort, standard features, competitive pricing, resale, and a big one for me if not standing out in the crowd, a WRX will always attract attention form the public and law!

Oh and would I buy an Australian built car? Yes, if the Focus was made here. Being built here might give us a few more options on choice I guess.

A lot of people don't realise that you don't actually need to have a Falcon with a six or eight cylinder engine to have spirited performance...or even sometimes that other cars do in fact exist and should be considered besides automatically saying "Buy a Falcon"....

Quoted for truth. The interior is something you will see 95% of the time. Choose an interior you will enjoy looking at more than the outside.

EvoX is meant to be a fun drive and probably faster than both and longer warranty.

If you're looking at VWs, why not look at the Polo GTI ? Most motring journos seem to think that they are even better than a Golf GTI and they go for about 30 grand.

Thought we were discussing new cars, my bad.

Still I'd take a brand new WRX over a 50k thrashed Evo any day.

Well, after having the WRX for three days and 700km I can reliably say it was sadly not the car for me.

It is a focused hot hatch with lethal performance which is accessible no matter the prevailing road conditions. In my case though, I felt fatigued after driving it any duration over 30 minutes, due to a combination of factors including the seat squab shape and firmness, the stiff and notchy transmission and the (for want of a better word) discipline that is required to keep your license intact. Seriously enjoyable if having a fang every time I drove it was a priority, but for the way I drive, and how comfortable I like to be whilst driving, it just didn't suit me.

There is definately an active target market out there for a such a car, and I definately have a new found respect for just how quick the WRX is and I wouldn't be lying if I said that I am dissapointed that I couldn't come to terms with the WRX's simplistic design brief and execution. I'ts a car I wanted to have enjoyed and owned, but the reality is that I will continue my search for my new car, and I will definately be expanding my list of candidates is light of what I experienced with the WRX.

The GTi is a no brainer, but with some of the new releases this year..... It may just well pay off to wait and see what comes out in competition.

what about the Subaru Liberty GT?
i have an 07 Liberty GT-B, 2.5 turbo, 5sp auto, great through the twisties, and can get as low as 8lts/100km on highway.
averaging about 10.8l/100 combined over the last 5 or 6000kms.
but they have leather seats..

I'd take the GTi. The sheer quality of the car more than makes up for the fact that it's not quite as quick.

I looked at the WRX (amongst others) before choosing a Mazda 3 MPS.

Rex was OK but horrid interior and 5 speed manual were the biggest let downs.

Drive both at least twice, then make a decision.
