I used to have cars when I went over. Before you leave get an international license from you state authority. When you are there just transfer the rego of the car you buy as you would here. I used to have insurance organised first as usually the DMV (California) would ask to see it. Not sure if things have changed though, I have not been over in several years now. Get on the net and check it out, surely the motor authorities over their have websites and email addresses.

I read somewhere recently that this is fraught with peril. From memory the problems revolve around not being able to insure something that you technically don't own because you aren't a US resident and can't register the car in your name over there. If you can't register it you therefore can't insure it.I will try to find the website I saw this on and post a link.

bought one back in 2003 when we lived over there for 4 months. There wasn't any problems in registering and insuring it. Don't worry about international licence in america, it's not needed.
It's too long ago to actually remember the details. Sorry.

We are heading over one day, we have a friend who will organise everything, and add us to insurance... Easiest way!

Selling the car in California might be a bit of a pain. They have to have a roadworthy check done on it when you transfer the rego, but can either be done by the seller or buyer. From memory, it's called a WOF. Not sure about if it applies to cars registered in another state though. Might want to look in to that.
