Rear Seal oil leak

The leak is fixed!

How I hear you say?

Took the car into Bruce this morning, put it on the hoist, and found the inspection plate on the trans to be bone dry. There was evidence of oil all over the trans case and the sump, but where was the leak coming from?

Got the torch out, checked the oil sender, sump bolts, the sump. Nope, no cracks or anything. Sump Gasket? nope, in perfect order.

Got the degreaser out and started the car, lifted the hoist for another look.

AHA.....its coming from the dip stick holder!!!! Took the dipstick and holder out and found the gasket/o-ring that seals it in the engine has broke loose under pressure build up in the sump.

Wacked another new o-ring on, cleaned up the excess oil and Im off.

Time = 45mins
Cost = $30 including labour and o-ring.

OUTCOME? VERY happy and relieved that this wasnt worse. :

I will keep a close eye on it over the next few days. Gonna do a full service this weekend.

Back to your oil can,does it breath too?

Not sure if I understand your question. But yeah the catch can is working properly and is venting back into the supercharger itself. That wasnt touched.

Hi guys.

The old mans ute is leaking oil; with the same symptons as described by Blueoval.

I was wondering how do you replace the O-ring on the dipstick? For the life of my I can't figure out how to remove the dipstick. I can't find any bracket or bolt holding it to the engine, but I can't pull the dipstick out either.

Does anybody know how to remove the dipstick?

Ahh well I'm a idiot...

No sooner had I walked back to the car, within 5 seconds of looking at the dipstick, I've located the bracket which secures the dipstick to the intake manifold.

Haha yeah...

I've removed the dipstick: there was no o-ring installed!

I thought to myself: "Hmm, ok, no o-ring, to test to see if this is the cause of the oil leak, I'll grab the o-ring out of another AU Falcon, whack it on the leaking Falcon, and see if the leak stops".

Unfortunately, the other AU Falcon didn't contain an o-ring!

This has got me thinking: Is the AU Falcon supposed to come with an o-ring for the dipstick? Could anybody confirm?

I've looked up other dipsticks, and they use an o-ring. Refer to part 12 in the below link:

They should come with the o'rings as standard. Failing this, you can probably pick one up from you local parts supplier for a few cents. Definitely worth getting to keep oil inside the engine instead of outside.

Yeah, I’ll head down to Ford and grab some...

I really do hope this sorts out the issue: at present, the old mans AUIII ute is losing a fair bit of oil (like what is shown on the pic in the previous page).
The thing is, it appears the oil is being lost when the car is warm and at a standstill; when he’s moving there doesn’t appear to be any oil lose...
All the other symptoms you’ve previously described occur...

I’d rather add an o-ring to the dipstick, then change a sump gasket!!

agreed. Do the cheap stuff first and then see how it goes. You may want to steam clean or degrease the underside of the car afterwards to keep an eye on future leaks once the o-ring is fitted.
