Question ST170 - RPM in 6th at 100km/h

Hi,

Curious to know what RPM does a Focus ST170 sit on when cruising along the highway in 6th gear at 100km/h?

Thanks in advance

Whats the final drive ratio? ie, the diff ratio? 6th would be an underdrive gear so it sounds like around 4.11 under there or something

The 6th gear ratio is 1.09:1 and the final drive ratio is 4.25:1. Stampy is right too, it revs at around 3000 rpm at 110km/h. This is much higher than you would expect from a 6 speed, but 3rd 4th and 5th are relatively close together and I’m guessing that the final drive ratio is almost the same as the normal focus 5 speed. It has its advantages though because you can use sixth quite happily from 80 km/h onwards.

Just an extra bit of info, I have achieved 43 mpg (6.5 l /100km) with a slight tail wind and driving conservatively. Normal highway economy is around 38 mpg though. Not bad for a performance car I thought.

That is what I said, and I agree it sits on about 2750 rpm to do 100 km/h.

Out of interest, we're on about 3,000rpm at 100km/h in the 5spd Manual 2.0 Zetec and 3,100rpm or so at 110km/h. I have averaged 7.4L/100km on roughly 110km/h on the highway but have nevr tested it to get it as low as possible. Peronsally I find it stupid and always feel (even after 3 years) that I have another gear to grab because 5th is geared so short. If it spun at 2,600rpm at 100km/h I'd be much happier. Performance is OK, it's really just a shortish gearbox covering for a gutless engine. ST170 is pretty much te same thing, just one extra ratio, still covering up for an otherwise unremarkably powerful engine. The graring in both cars works, but it's strange to ger the top gears in each so high. When on Earth would you EVER need a short 6th gear?!!!!!! Defies logic.

Just checked my 2.0 litre Zetec up and down the Eastern Freeway.

2600 rpm @ 100kmh
2900 rpm @ 110kmh

Checked it 3-4 times

Stephen don't htink it might be your alloys being a different diameter? Shouldn't be that different surely!! I can guarantee mine's above 3,000rpm at 110km, but I'll check tomorrow using the digital odometer check
