Was I too nice?

So today at the shops, my nice newly painted left side got some red lipstick on it. I was going around to my sons door and too my amazement this chic let go of her door and the wind smashed it into mine. It left her red paint on my door and I couldn't wipe it off, she offered to pay and was very sorry, (I made it a point to tell her it was just resprayed lol) I just told her don't worry, I will get it sorted. Should I have made her pay? I just couldn't be bothered over something that would "buff out" lol.

As much of a headache as it would be (given it was newly painted), IMO I think you did the right thing. If it indeed will simply buff out.

Its not like some people out there who willingly fling their door wide open slamming into the car next to them, without a damn care in the world.

Yeah... if it can buff out you did the right thing. I would have done the same, even if it was an old stoger.. The fact thay offered to pay, and said sorry also makes it much better.

Most people wouldnt care and would walk/ drive off or make some stupid comment.

yeah she grabbed her phone out and offered to give me her number to tell her the cost of sorting it out. I just said don't worry. It clearly was the wind that did it, but she should have known to hold the door as it was very windy, prob wouldn't be so bad, but this shopping centre, all bays are the size of a standard disabled bay so it had room to swing all the way at force.

All the same, I have had the same thing happen to me, and I knew the blemish would polish out. I didn't see any point in going through all the bs involved in seeking payment and having to deal with a smash repairer.

What goes around comes around too..... Someone may extend a similar level of patience and understanding to you in the future if you ever find yourself in such a position.

Whilst annoying as hell it falls in to the ***** happens catagory
With luck it hasn't damaged the panel and will buff / polish out

At least she was apologetic I've had them tell me my freshly painted car was "just a car" and I "shouldn't be so pressious"

I find I'm a lot more forgiving if the person actually acknowledges they have done something really wrong, admits it was their fault, and if the circumstances are similar to what you described (wind blew the door against yours), and apologises.

If it's someone who just throws their door open and it smacks yours, and they either totally ignore it or just shrug and go "so what", then it gets taken to the next level...

I was at the airport in a work car waiting for someone, and a car pulled up and next thing you know I hear BANG. The passenger wildly swung the door into mine, I give her the WTF, and she just says "im late for a flight, ive got to go"
There was your typical door ding, but being a work vehicle I didnt really care (because they wouldnt have fixed it anyway)

Now if it was my car and I wasnt in uniform....

I would have made her pay, that is the only way they learn, my 12 month old Ranger has 3 sperate marks on it from doors, and we always park a long way away from others, but some tool will always park beside you FFS.

You did the right thing.

I heard a story about someone who hit a car in a car park, got out, wrote a note, put it under the wiper, got back in their car and drove off. When the owner got back to their car and read the note, it said words to the effect of;

"Ive hit your car and there are people watching me so I'm pretending to do the right thing but I don't give a damn. Catch me if you can."

The bloke went over to the people collecting for some charity who must have been the people who the idiot who drove into him was talking about and asked them if they saw anything and maybe took the number plate. They said yeah they saw it but as the guy left a note they didn't think anymore of it.

You did the right thing for sure. There's too many people who don't give a damn. We've gotta try out number them.

I think you just make a judgement call. If they are genuinely sorry, and your happy to wear it, then let them know about it. Some people don't care. Like a guy in the car park at work, reversed into a motorcycle parking area and collected a bike, knocking it off the side stand and onto it's side. He stopped and looked, saw the bike on the side and drove off. Fortunatley there several witnesses who all made a note of the plates and called the police to report it. Those people deserve no mercy.
