falcon would normally outsell mondeo by at least 2:1. basing opinions on the january sales figure is not an accurate indication. sales are always low in dec/jan but thanks to extra down days and a hailstorm, they were worse than normal. feb and on, they should be back around the 1100-1200 at least.

having said that, i do agree that mondeo is an odd one. being a global car, it probably isn't costing them much to offer it on sale in australia, but is it costing them falcon sales? i'm not sure they are too worried if they are. they seem to be happy to promote their whole range rather than just the aussie contingent.

I picked up a ex-demo Frozen White Titanium Mondeo 3 weeks ago. Love it. Interestingly, when waiting for the salesman, I heard the falcon used as a comparison point.
"Have a look at both - You tell me how much boot space there is?"
"There is more leg room in the mondeo than a falcon"

I wish they'd tell you the reasons!

Front rear drive - no diff and tail-shaft.
It's longer than a Falcon.

Then share the Falcon's benefits;

Rear diff means better towing, better weight distribution, better front tyre wear, etc.
Falcon is wider.

We have Mondeo's at work and compared to the Falcon, it's cramped inside. There's no way, I'd swap my Falcon for a Mondeo (although our Mondeo's are the base model diesels).

1 big plus for the Falcon - it has the blinker stalk on the right side

Actually almost a year to the day...11th February last year we picked up the G6E from Tropical Ford in Rockhampton.

It was a close toss of the coin between it and a VE Series 2 SV6, but Ford offered an amazing trade in deal on the 100 series Landcruiser we owned at the time, as well as the G6E being a 50th Anniversary one with sat nav and premium stereo package thrown in.

It's just clocked over 32,000km with no issues. To my surprise the 19" tyres on the G6ET wheels it had on it when we bought it are still wearing really well and have heaps of life left in them...I was kind of expecting them to wear out pretty quickly.

When we had the XR5 Mondeo I found it had more leg room then the Falcon... Couldnt put my seat all the way pack for fear of not reaching the pedals!

I'm always curious about conquest sales, a few months back I saw new AWD SZ Territory diesels being used by Pacific National which appeard to have replaced some Pathfinders and Patrols.

Also saw last week a diesel Mondeo police car. Woolworths have replaced their Falcon and Commodores with diesel Mondeos and Jettas.

So diesel Fords seem to be picking up sales.

I am a total Ford convert. Love them. 2 new Fords in the past 2 years (G6E, Territory) and I just picked up a used Focus - loving that too.
Apart from a couple of Falcon company cars I drove in the early 90s, for decades I never gave Ford a thought. These days, they are the first option I think of - and they have pretty much every car type I need covered one way or the other.
