Default falcons EcoLPi Savings Calculator looking grim

with the price of LPG at nearly 100 cents per litre the falcons EcoLPi saving calculators doesnt look very enticing anymore,,,would take nearly 7 years at and average 20 000ks to recoup the extra cost of the LPG falcon.

And how much higher does the price of LPG have to get before the gas setup in older cars that have duel fuel systems a dead weight...tank and bits and pieces

In Melbourne today the price for Fuel was:
ULP: 149.9
LPG: 79.9

Using the following figures for fuel economy:
I-6 Petrol: 9.9 l/100k
EcoLPi: 12.3 l/100k
EcoBoost: 8.1 l/100k

I get the following cost of fuel per 100k:
I-6 Petrol: $14.84
EcoLPi: $9.82
EcoBoost: $12.14

So the cost of fuel if you do 20,000 km per year:
I-6 Petrol: $2968
EcoLPi: $1965
EcoBoost: $2428

So the savings of the EcoLPi over the I-6 petrol and EcoBoost if you do 20,000km per year
I-6 Petrol: $1002
EcoBoost: $463

The premium for the EcoLPi over the I-6 Petrol is $2560. If you are a private buyer their is a rebate of $2,000.

So if you are a private buyer doing 20,000 km per year the EcoLPi will cost you an extra $560. With it saving you approx $1,000 per year in fuel the EcoLPi will pay itself off in a little over six months. I wonder where the OP got the 7 years from?

Comparing current prices i've seen in Brisbane for ULP and LPG and the URBAN FUEL CYCLE of FG II Falcon
namely, EcoLPI, I-6 petrol vs Ecoboost 2.0, the approximate cost per 100 km of city driving:

EcoLPI:
18.1 l/100 km x 87.5 cents/litre = $16.19

I-6 ULP:
14.6 l/100 km x 145 cents/litre = $21.17

Ecoboost:
11.8 l/100 km x 145 cents/litre = $17.11

Savings over I-6 petrol:

EcoLPI = $5.00/100 km

Ecoboost = $4.00/100 km

For people seeking good fuel economy in a big car,
Ford will soon have two great Falcon to choose from,
that is cause for celebration...

Ecoboost I-4 looks like it will win a lot of friends, providing relief and great looking fuel numbers to Ford,
that's the key these days with retail and fleet buyers just looking at combined fuel economy numbers.

This could still work out well for Ford....

Correct, and what are the average kms of fleet cars? The private sector while nice is not what ford would be after imo. Thats where eb will come in handy.

Also what about companies that want to lower their co2/emissions. Iirc the lpg falcon is a bit lower, dont underestimate the power of a green thumb.

I think its a mix of both of your statements. * People filling up their EcoLPi will be paying alot less than filling up with petrol.
* People filling up their EcoBoost will be spending the same as before but thinking about how much longer it is between fuel stops / refuel for them.

It therefore depends on the mindset!

So, I agree with JP. This could still work out well for Ford.

PS Newcastle prices are 79.9-89.9cpl LPG / 146.9-152.9cpl ULP @ 28/3/2012.

Going by the number of Falcon adverts and the overhaul of the website, I think Ford are about to start chasing private / novated lease sales harder than in a long time.

Seems pretty clear in the past 2 weeks they just want sales. I think it might have even been you Polyal who said it's like a switch has been turned on.

I do agree that the sub 200gCO2/km is a barrier to many fleet sales.
* XT LPi is 199g/km.
* XT EcoBoost 192g/km.

Not sure if this one has been posted anywhere, but a good review for the EcoLPI.

"The only real difference that you may notice, if you’re really picky, is a slight difference in low-down torque. It’s not that there isn’t enough, we feel the power and torque band is simply a bit different than that in the normal petrol. A way around this if you’re keen is to simply use the gears and find the best rev-range for the conditions. During fairly hard driving the engine responds well in kick-down, and really shifts the big G6 just like normal."

I'm with you Powered by CNG. I don't believe a word of it actually. I drive a Territory with virtually the same system and I don't experience that at all. I think what is actually coming across in the journalists comments is a bit of anti LPG bias which assumes that there must be some glaring down point in this car as it is on LPG after all, and some Holden bias, that the Ford offering can't possibly have that much ahead of the Holden. That report was definitely biased.

The whole torque power curve of the Eco-LPi happens earlier in the rev range than the petrol and there is more of it. How can it possibly feel a bit hollow at low revs?????

Petrol has gone up in price too, but yeah LPG seems to have increase a lot more proportionally speaking.

I bet ford is biting themselves now hard for not implementing the diesel in the Falcon instead ...

A diesel Falcon would actually be more expensive to run than the EcoLpi, and be down on power over the petrol version. Can't see that working actually.
