Well if that is what he is talking about, increasing the GST to 15% will make no difference! An increase in the GST rate won't discourage current practices!

The guy who started this thread is probably a toilet cleaner at the ATO - he has no idea what he is talking about.

He initially said he was a "normal PAYG taxpayer", then later he said he was an IT Contractor at the ATO..... so what is he really?? His 2 different descriptions of his employment status are at odds with one another.

Well the public service has "contracts" to employ people for a short period of time. They have the same conditions as permanent PAYG employees with the exception of preknown a termination date. They then renew the contract if they wish to.

It does have an advantage that they can make sure they only employ the dumb ones, after all if you show ability and aptitude you may be a threat to your manager's position........

There has already been mumblings over internet shopping and how tax is avoided as a result. So the gov't is looking at ways to tax this sort of thing.

Typical though. The consumer tries to save a buck any way they possibly can and the gov't wants a slice of that pie regardless.

even if the gst is applied to imports under a grand the buyer can still save a huge amount over retail up to and exceeding 50% and more

Easily fixed.

Increase the PAYG tax rate to 75% and then allow claim backs on receipts of goods purchased in Australia.

*shakes head at some responses*

Some of you guys understand...some do not. Im not surprised, the tax system is complex. Ill start over.

Problems:

1. Incredibly complex tax system, particularly income tax. the consumption side (the GST) is fairly simple (it replaced the diabolical sales tax system in 2000).

2. The complex tax system wastes taxpayer dollars and has created a false industry. I see the waste from the inside and Im appalled. (and some idiots in this thread are criticizing me?!)

3. Income tax slugs most of us, but not the super rich who - wisely - use family trusts and offshore mechanisms which Im no guru in. They dont pay much income tax at all. But everyone reading this post does pay it.

4. You cannot avoid the GST when u visit a restaurant, buy a car, buy groceries, go to the movies.

Anyone care to disagree with these points? They seem straightforward and reasonable to me.
