Default HOLDEN design partnership with Chinese.

A cynic would think they waited on this story... waited knowing the axe was falling at Toyota roughly around now, and announced this today!

Holden Forges New Design and Engineering Partnership with China
Holden signed an historic agreement today with Shanghai General Motors (SGM) and the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) to develop new vehicles for SGM and its affiliates in the growing Chinese market.

PATAC is a 50-50 joint venture between GM and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp (SAIC). It provides automotive engineering services including design, development, testing and validation of components and vehicles to SGM and its affiliates in China.

The long-term partnership will see a Holden team drive the development of at least two new vehicles for the world’s largest car market.

The Holden designers and engineers working on the program will be based in Holden’s Technical Centre in Port Melbourne. The team will develop the new vehicles, which will be underpinned by GM global platforms, and tailor them for the Chinese market.

Holden Chairman and Managing Director, Mike Devereux, announced the partnership to employees in Melbourne today with the leaders of SGM and PATAC.

“Holden is a valuable source of expertise within GM International Operations and we’re one of only seven fully-integrated design, engineering and manufacturing operations in the GM world,”
he said.

“We have worked with SGM and PATAC in recent years on smaller projects, but this is the first significant, long-term project to partner our organisations.

“It gives the Holden workforce a great sense of pride to work on global vehicle programs like this and to see Australian design, engineering and manufacturing expertise exported around
the world.”

The R&D is done here, much like what FoA did with the Ranger and that Indian small car. So yes, the smarts are here and we should be thankful.

This is news to me as GM is very anti-Chinese-car-industry, and I don't blame them. Last thing China's car industry needs is everyone's know how.

But like Boss said.. FoA been doing it for years now. And the Figo is India's favourite new car. They love it.

GM are the number 1 seller in China, so your a bit off tack there, yes they denied the SAAB sale to protect their interlectual property, but thats a different story, they are definately not anti Chinese.

Top selling car there is the Buick Lacrosse I think.

Because they want their product to dominate their market... but helping the local chinese manufacturers is almost against policy for them. As you stated with the blocking of sale to Youngman.

Excellent news to hear, this has been in the pipeline for a while...And as Polyal has mentioned, the engineering and design work will actually be done here. What this is doing is providing job security tto the thousands employed at Fisherman's Bend and creating opportunities for more jobs =)

They already have been building the commy there. Buick Park Avenue by Shanghai GM.

Yes it would be a nice bargain buy if Great Wall got the tooling and exported it as a cheap, decent looking LWB sedan. I wouldn't mind one with a great wall badge.

Why would they give their opposition a free kick with the technology they created.

Can't see why they would want to help the Chinese, they are rivals.
