Hally, this really is our experience too. I've never had an issue with road noise in ours. Maybe different tyres/sound proofing between models?

Not at all.

But i'm just curious why someone who seems to have zero interest in Fords in any way is on a Ford enthusiast site thats all.

They handle pretty crap and the factory tyres are ordinary.
I missed a turn off the highway in one a little while ago and turned a little late and fast, there was also a little gravel in the middle of the intersection. Anyway it understeered big time and I was certianly doing some sphincter puckering.
My fault? Probably, but if you drive like any other vehicle it can catch you out.

Oh and it was in a petrol one, a heavier diesel one would be even worse?

This seems to be the prevailing opinion, understeery (with relatively indirect steering). I'd personally go for the (cheaper) Skoda Yeti TDI manual, and get heaps of interior room (complete with removable rear seats). As well as this, it's probably the most fun to drive in its segment (with the exception of the BMW X1). The VW TDI engines are reliable (unlike their TSI engines), and the interior is of an Audi standard.
