Best bang for buck???

Gday guys: i need some vehicular advice.

Due to my situation, i have $1200 to get a daily driver for the next 6-12 months, it needs to get me from A to B without problems (preferably up hills too, i do a bit of that), and i need to be able to cart around my guitar amps and such in.

what are my options?

opinions/advice/thoughts welcomed & appreciated.

How big is your amp?

Compact option - cheap and reliable late 90s Hyundai Excel; borig as hell, but can't kill 'em with a blunt stick

More room - Volvo 240 series wagon - bullet proof.

That money would just about get you a XD-EF Wagon too....

TS Magna V6, should be able to pick one up for that price. Or maybe an early 90s Corolla sedan/liftback? An E series Ford in that price range is liable to blow a head gasket which would cost more to fix than what the car is worth.

those 3.8 litres are pretty tough. Years back this guy owed me $600 and couldnt pay so he gave me his VN commodore. It had 360,000km on it and needed a water pump but had almost a years rego. Paint and interior pretty good cond. Went like the clappers and gearbox was great too.

I used to park it at train station and even drove it to Gold coast and back (from Sydney) at new years, It used to scream away from a set of lights... With about a months rego left (I had it for 9-10 months) I sold it for $1800.

Even a good buy for the bloke who bought it for $1800, good car. This was 5-6 years back too.

E series wagon would be the nicer car to drive, but prone to head gaskets. I agree with HULK, a VN or VP wagon, as rough as they may be, is probably going to be the cheaper option.

go to an auction you may be able to pick up something newer with minimal damage. i have seen VX's and earlier VY's selling for as cheap as $1200, seen a 2002 VX wagon with a bit of side damage, still running, 1 month out of rego, 150000km for $1300. even a VR-VT registered going for around that price.

jimmyD: i know about the excels, my brother in law has had one for 6 years and you're right, can't kill 'em with a blunt stick. BUT: i tried to load my gear in there once and it was a pain.
