Default longshot call for help - BFBOSS - anyone know a car wearing these plates?

Hi guys

Its been years since I've been on this forum. This may be a long shot but I'm hoping somebody can help me.

I received a call from a senior constable from the Richmond Police Station about a hit and run last week. The car involved was wearing the plates BFBOSS. I bought these plates brand new, never used them, and sold them in the box to another person in 2007. I signed the transfer papers, but apparently he didn't take them into Vic Roads and they have been in my name ever since. I didn't take a copy, so I dont have his details (stupid of me I know).

Since last week, I have received 2 speeding infringement notices, with the car wearing these plates. The incidents both occured in Alexandra Parade Fitzroy North in Melbourne on the 20th and 22nd April. I'm not sure where the hit/run happened. Because the plates are still in my name, I'm all the police have to go on for now. They will get a copy of the photograph of the car in these incidents and are on the lookout for a car wearing these plates. In the meantime, I'm getting all the fines etc being sent to me.

If anyone knows someone who drives a car with these plates, or know where it or the owner can be found, can you please pm me urgently.

Thanks everyone.

Dave

Sorry to hear.

Has this car been driving around the whole time unregistered then?

Something doesn't sound right here.

Could they be mock up plates? My brother had a set made up with his last name and 8/10 people would not know they were 'fake' plates if mounted on a car.

Do you remember how you were paid? Cash, Bank Cheque, Personal Cheque, Direct Deposit, PayPal. Any chance of tracking that person down through your banking details?

sorry to hear buddy, but let this be a lesson for everyone, when it comes to registration your better off making sure it gets registered in the new name, whether it be plates or even if you sell the car without a RWC, it can still be transferred into the new persons name without a RWC and even the transfer fees will be sent out to the new owner to pay. Its the onus of the new owner to pay and supply vicroads with a current RWC within a month. anyway good luck Dave

thanks guys. To clarify I only sold the number plates. I filled in my section of the transfer papers and gave them to the buyer, thinking and expecting him to sign his bit and submit to Vic Roads.

The plates were sold on EBAY. All I have is his user ID, which means jacksh$t.

Do you not have a copy of the transfer papers like when selling the car? Even ebay reciept and a statdec should be enough to have the police move along.

Edit: Ok went back though my stuff, turns out the seller(of a plated car) typically sends the paperwork to VicRoads, they buyer submitting their paperwork is what completes the transfer, I would contact VicRoads/RTA/QLD Transport and ask if they have the paperwork on your end.

I kept reciving fines when I transferred my Vic plated car about a year ago dispite sending in the forms; it wasn't until the buyer had completed the transfer that I stopped getting the fines.

Out if curiosity, how do Vicroads give you a set of number plates not registered/allocated to an actual vehicle?

You purchase them online and they are sent out to you via mail.
Once you wish to put them on a car you call up Vicroads and tell them your car details, they then allocate the plates to the car you have described.

Now the question is how did the person pay ?
If paypal your problems are over as the account transfer will be proof , if not ebay will still have a copy of the sale transaction which will proove it's not you although tracing the bloke is not going to be easy as ebay blindly acceots information with out verification , good luck with it and do let us know about the resolution

Thanks for explaining chrisfpv. I am only used to the NSW way in which you need to take your old plates in and swap for the new plate. e.g you can order custom plate and have them held at the RTA but when you want them you take the old ones in.

Isn't it possible that the person who purchased the plates from you in 2007 did the same as you did and moved them on prior to fitting them to a vehicle as well ?? It seems like a long time to have something if you purchased it with the intent of using it dishonestly. Sorry to throw a spanner in the works but going off the rules in Vic. it sounds like a distinct possibility

thats right. I've never understood the VIC system.

The hassle i went through to get a horsefloat re-registered in NSW without the original plates ....RTA wanted stat decs signed on a stack of bibles, I had to file a police report as to the old ones gone missing etc, etc...but I guess it avoids problems like the OP

Go to Vicroads and cancel the plates. Since they were never put into the new persons name, and you keep getting fined.

My friend had a simialar incident she sold her VIC plates and after 2 years started getting fines ect in the mail
She lodge something with VIC ROADS who went back through there database to find the old transfer and than transfered all the fines over to that new person

If you transfered them you should of also put in a notice aswell.
So this will help you

If you ended up selling them via that site, maybe you can check your PMs or get in contact with the forum admins to see if they can help.

You have an eBay name, eBay generally keeps a record of where a person logs on from, so they will be able to trace it back to the person you sold it to, if that person sold them again, it is now their problem and not yours.

I also believe the proof of sale is a legal document that eBay must store and you should be able to request it through an email to eBay, I would do the same for payment method unless it was cash in hand, check with your bank or Paypal, pass it on the the next guy and see if he can help the police get the guy.
