Slightly off topic, I want to compliment all you Australian Ford Forum members for very tasteful comments regarding Mr. Shelby's passing. Shelby was certainly not infallible, and I'm not a big fan of some of his later business dealings, but his contributions to the automotive world in general and the Ford performance world in particular are undeniable.

In an American forum I frequent—supposedly a Ford fan forum—there has been ridiculous highly distasteful bickering over the man and his accomplishments. I am very impressed that people half a world away seem much more knowledgeable and are demonstrably more respectful. Good on you all!

I find it so hard to pic one of his best cars as there is so many. But for me the ultimate car is this.

I remember an old Bill Cosby comedy cassette I had many years ago where he said he used to drive foreign sports cars, until Caroll Shelby came up to him one day and said "Bill...why the hell are you driving them goddamn foreign cars? You got them Maseratis and whatever...let me build you a Cobra, then you'll see what a real car is like". So he did.
Cosby said when it arrived it was "this little blue thing with pipes coming out the side and wrapping all around the place and was it loud!". More importantly, he said "And when I squeezed inside it, there was a big speedo in front of me, and it started at zero, and went all the way around to 200mph, and underneath that there was a gap, and it had the words "Oh wow!"..."
Bill Cosby actually gave that car back, because it scared him too much.
Is it just me or has anyone else wondered why have they not said how he died?

Not really wondering - he had a history of heart disease from childhood, which was the reason he retired from racing, and had a transplant in the '90's?

Company statement was that he was admitted to hospital with pneumonia. At 89 that's not good....

By outspending Ferrari 10 to 1 and using a huge engine capacity advantage?
A major world corporation v a small volume car maker.
Acting like sooks then leaving sports cars to build pintos.
Thats how it really looks.

outspending 10 to 1 to beat ford teams is a ferrari specialty in world motorsport
at least ford won when outspending the opposition . . . . and of course they won while underspending with a smaller capacity motor

Started by Honda in the 1980's.
Pretty hollow victories thoiugh by ford, took their bat and ball and went home.
Where is the long line of sports cars?
