Staining treated pine timber?

Built a deck out of treated pine and Im now up to staining it. I've picked a dark stain (merbau) and the stain says it is ok for treated timber, the only thing that worries me is that the timber I used for the steps is visibly darker (due to the treated element) than the decking timber. I don't want to end up with two odd looking pieces of timber so just wondering if there's anything I can do to minimise that happening. I do intend on giving all the timber a light sand before stain.

You should be able to get away with staining the stairs a bit less.

How about staining the deck first then wait about six months before staining the stairs?

Here's a little woody wood worker trick... sand the steps to a finer grade as the surface will hold less pigments!(I'm assuming your using oil based stain? wont work for water based)

I don't understand Aust,

Merbau is reddish brown/orange/mahogany.

Treated pine is pale grey/green. Sure you can stain it, but it will never look the same. When I do decks, I usually don't have my painter stain the joists/bearers or stumps for this reason. Maybe paint them with a colour Aust, that's my reccomendation.

EDIT: Did you use Merbau as the decking boards?

As above, staining isn't really an option I'd use if the timber is treated pine. You can paint it, no problem but I don't think staining is an option? Happy to be proven wrong, however when I was working in a timber mill we usually sold stain to people who purchased kapur or merbau etc. I've also never seen a stained permapine deck.

EDIT: Did you use Merbau as the decking boards?

Re: Merbau, I have tried just about all the stains and oils from so many manufacturers, Feast and Watson, Cabots, Intragrain.. None last more than 4-6 months in full weather.

Sikkens is the best stain i've used on treated pine. It's a 3 coat process and is quite expensive, but I thinkit gives the closest colour results to the desired timber. Other stains make the treated pine look orange.

As for the stairs, I wouldn't worry about it to much, you have variances in natural hardwoods anyway, so it will look normal.

Have you tried a 90/10 mix of linseed and turps to seal ??
I find it helps keep colour ...
