Okie dokie guys - Had the filter in now for about 1000kms now, and still extremely happy with it. Im now just worried about 2 things, heat soak, as mentioned by everyone, as well as the fact of it being illegal.
I have been looking at every forum known to mat, including xr5turbo.com (even though mines missing a cylinder :P) and cant find much info on my best bet. I have seen people make home jobs out of tin sheeting, but I want it to look good still. I came across this on ebay, http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....=STRK:MEWAX:IT but its just a shield, so will apparently stop the heat soak, but will still be illegal. I still have to measure my filter to make sure this will fit, but wanted to get your guys opinions on how I could modify this to have the filter fully enclosed. Thanks in advance for the replies!

I don't think this will help too much. Whilst it will shield the pod filter from engine heat, the source of most of the air for the filter is the engine bay. Perhaps it could work in combination with more cold air feeds.

Been searching all night again at other options and it seems like the best bet with my set-up... I dont think heat has been an issue - temp gauge has been in the same spot, but Im sure shielding the heat away has to help , but its mostly the 'illegalness' that im trying to get away from...

ok, I found something on a forum (which was posted 3 years ago) This is exactly what I need. I have done a little mock up of exactly how I need it to look (with the intake hose to be attached to the bottom). But of course, either option would work.
Would I need to go to a metal fabricator to get this made up? Or any ideas in Syd where I would need to go? Cheers

If you're going to go down the path of getting an exhaust shop to manufacture a custom setup, you might as well go the whole hog and get a custom intake tube made up, which places the pod filter out of the engine bay, down near the front bumper (LHS). The only thing you would need to do first is rip out your lower airbox, if you haven't done that already. Check out this option from K&N for the 2.3L Duratec American Focus.
In fact, another forum member (cannot remember who sorry), tried to a group order going for custom intake tubes like this some time ago. |

Well Im sorted I think - done a cheap dodgy method which seems to work quiet well for $5 in parts and $10 for the cheapest hole saw kit Bunnings sold!
I ended up using a small bin with a hole cut out at the top for the throttle body pipe, and now you cant see the filter at all. The intake hose sits right at the filter at the bottom so should get the cold air, and block a bit of the heat. Took it for a quick drive last night after the install and it didnt move. Temp was fine, so I think its a good enough fix, and enough to get cops off my back if I get pulled over. Only down side was that I had gloss black paint (from the brakes) when I should've spent the extra $15 and got some matt black paint! Its a crap iphone pic, but here it is anyway!

Resurrecting an old thread to ask a simple question.
How often is everybody doing the clean/reoil on their K & N Filters? For some reason I thought it was once a year or 10,000km, which is about what I've done, but after I bought the recharge kit I found a reference on the instructions to doing this process every 50,000 miles. That said, I'm thinking 50,000 miles, or 80,000 kms, might be too long, especially in a dry, dusty place like Oz. I've had the filter out four or five times in the last twelve months to tap out leaves and bugs, and to vacuum out the airbox (works on the filter, too), and it's still pinkish red in colour, but how long should I leave it? All opinions welcome.

It is an old thread! Tbh I dont think I ever read the suggested time. I generally have done it every 6 months, which for me is less than 10k. Whilst for me it still looks very red, but there is always a lot of dust in mine.
Was going to do it tis weekend but ran out of time! Good to see what everyone else is doing!

Thanks, Chris. Interestingly, K & N's site is saying that unless you can't see the wire mesh ie it's totally covered in dust and dirt, it's OK. Again, that sounds like way too long. On the other hand, I don't want to over-oil or even waste unnecessary time & money...

Hmm, yeah I think I may have been overdoing it also...
Similar story, have a similar filter for my radio control car (2 stroke) used too much spray oil and wouldn't start... Used a clean filter and all good, so wonder how bad for your car it is if too oiled?
