Default getting the bonnet repainted (silver)....2 options, opinions???

Hey guys

Just a quick question, Im wanting to get my bonnet repainted (liquid silver). The sprayer has given me two options; 1st just spray the bonnet and hopefully it will match, he can't guarantee this or 2nd respray bonnet and two front guards and it will definitely match. 2nd option is almost twice as much...confused what do you guys reckon?

Whats to say that option 2 will match the rest of the car?
Theres nothing worse than seeing the colour on the front half of a car being slightly diffrent to the rest of it.

Find a decent painter who can do a good colour match. It can be done.
Earlier this year I had a bloke run into the back of my car, theres no way you can tell the whole rear bar's been repaired and repainted.
Its a near perfect colour match to the rest of the car, which wasnt damaged or re-painted. See pic..

wow....thats pretty good, even though I'm just looking at photo and not in real life. Apparently silver is the hardest to match. The painter has quoted me 800 to do the bonnet and two front guards. Do you mind me asking you how much it cost you to spray the bumper?

The gaurds wont be fully painted, but rather the colour is blended or "flicked" into them so if the new paint is slightly different, it will be a gradual change.

Being a bonnet, you can getaway without blend. The bonnet is typically a large flat area, and the gaurds on another angle, so the difference is not as noticeable.

so from you experience just a bonnet respray will suffice? I didn't want to spend too much on a car thats worth about $5k but don't wanna drive around with a dodgy bonnet either.

All comes down to the bloke matching the colour and painting it and how confindent you are in them.

I have seen bonnets painted without blends, and sometimes it works.

Silver is a very tricky colour to mix too...

800 is not a bad price, so if it makes you feel at ease get the gaurds done aswell.

The ability of the painter does count for a fair bit, but the inability of OEM's to poorly paint cars on the production line certainly makes things pretty difficult.

Matching the colour itself is no big deal, the fact remains, when they blend the colour of the adjacent panel then clear coat the entire panel, you will get a colour variance.

The colour variance is due to the correct amount of clear coat being applied over the factory finish. It doesn't change the colour, but will change the depth of the colour which gives the perception of a colour change.

Put it this way, Toyota use 600ml of colour and 1.1lts of clear on an entire camry/aurion, Ford would be about the same. Your painter painting the bonnet and blending the gaurd will use about the same amount of material.

so basically at the end of the day, what you pay for is what you get. Obviously the more effort a painter (provided his ability is high) puts into his work he's obviously would need to be reimbursed for the time and effort. Bottom line is that if my car were $50k i wouldn't hesitate to seek best results but keep in mind my Au monty only worth $5k thereabouts. To spend $800-1000 is something i need to reconsider. To be honest I thought $250-300 to spray my bonnet would be enough (and I hope I don't insult any spray painters here by being a cheapskate) but I guess I'm wrong...hhmm

Take the advice of the proffesionals and get the guards blended. I just had my bonnet replaced and they blended the guards, the car's black and you can't pick it.
What's harder to match is the orange peel, that's the biggest giveaway when something has been repainted.
Make sure they get that right and you'll be sweet

Why do you want to get your bonnet resprayed?
Could you not just find anothe rbonnet the same colour with decent paint?
That way its more likely to match - and cost you a lot less too.

If someone is using the car's current colour as a guide, make sure you give the closest panels the full clean, maybe even clay, beforehand.

I remember getting a car mudguard resprayed the correct OEM colour, but it was noticeably less "yellowish" than the old clearcoat. It wasn't until an application of clay and polish that the older parts looked more like the new.

Problem with that is, chances are it will be a different colour anyway.

Different batch of paint, already resprayed etc...

Yeah I have already looked into it. Too many factors to consider, chips, colour, type of bonnet, condition of bonnet, etc etc

I had the damage repaired via insurance I dont know what the cost was. It was done at my repairer tho.

My front bar is incorrectly colour matched (bought the car that way) and my painter/beater quoted me around $400 to 450 to R & R the bar, totally strip it, re prime in proper plastic paint primer and repaint with the same quality/level paint match. That said he does look after me, so to walk in off the street might be more.

Bars can be different, not all shops will paint the whole bar...most will repair and blend around the damage.

just my observation over the years , but it seems as blended, matched or otherwise repair jobs as they age they seem to become more obvious that they are different from the original paint,
personally i`d rather wear a few scratches /stone chips proudly than have a section of the car painted and look like it`s been smashed and repaired with a different front on it in couple of years, and from what i`ve seen liquid silver is notoriously hard to match even though Donny`s looks pretty good.

That depends on how bad the rest of the car is?

If your paint is newish and been looked after well, parked in shade, then should be able to get away with just bonnet.

If you car has been parked in sun all its life then no chance.... blend it in.

Edit...Elaboration.

To vinyl wrap a car, you still need to get it painted...and the colour of the vinyl will still be different... unless you want to be silly and use CF wrap or matte black...

I am a spraypainter by trade and used to work in the smash repair side of the business.
IMO blend the guards.
I would, if in the same situation.

Sigh...

-the colour would still be different
-you need to get a new/repair old bonnet
-You still need to paint the bonnet any way
-Then there is the cost to apply it.

..its just not an option.

Vinyl is not a subsitute for what this bloke wants to do with his car.

very true, its not like its a power machine with go fast stuff and cool wrap, its just an AU MONTY. I just wanna freshen up the bonnet, keep it clean and sell it one day (not too soon though). May have to have to outlay the $800. I had another painter offer $200 to spray the bonnet. He said overall it will look ok, but if Im really fussy he can't guarantee it will be perfect. If it means one day when i need to sell the car and it makes it that easier I guess I ll pay the $800.
