A tyre will last around 7 years. There is no expirey date on them, but they do have a used by date. It is around 7 years.
All tyres have stamps on them to tell you how old they are. Most tyres go hard after 7 years and can be really dangerous. |

I think it would be better to find out if there is actually a requirement to change tyres after a certain time rather just dismiss it out of hand.
I had a problem with a tyre on my GTP just prior to selling it. The tyres were the original Dunlop SP9000's and the right front went flat, luckily in the garage. It looked like the tread had just started to separate near the sidewall and there was no sign of a puncture. The tyre place told me the tyres should be replaced after 5 years. Didn't matter much in my case as the tyres were almost 9 years old and as the SP9000's weren't made any more I put 4 new tyres on her. I'd be interested to know if there is some legal requirement or if it's just a tyre manufacturers recommendation. |

It's not a hard used by date, but recommended. It's up to you to decide the risk.
It tells you exactly how old, & why they should be replaced/not used, & what happens to them, on the Bridgestone Web page I linked to earlier. http://www.bridgestone.com.au/tyres/.../care/age.aspx |

There is no law currently on tyre age.
But tyres do only last 5 years. |

Way to many external factors to determine what age a tyre is cactus.
I think the 5 / 7 years mentioned is to be on the 'safe side'. Actually, in the end you are only talking about tyres. If you don't do a lot of km then does that mean you will never bother changing them??? A car that has had an easy life, with lots of short, low speed trips may have decent tread depth, but what happens if that car needs to brake suddenly, or drive in the rain, or venture out on a freeway?? If it is such an issue, they should include this as a rego inspection requirement. Not many can read or understand the date code. Tyres over 7 years should be treated the same as bald / damaged tyres IMO. Break that cost down to a 'per year' figure and it would be about as much as a dinner for 2 at a cafe for most drivers...
