Toyota Camry and Aurion recalled over fire risk

August 9, 2012 - 5:07PM
Almost 20,000 cars recalled over possible fuel leak.

Toyota has announced a recall for its locally made Camry, Camry Hybrid and Aurion sedans over a potential fuel leak that could present a fire hazard.

The recall affects all cars built between in the company’s Altona plant in Melbourne between October 2011 and July 2012. Toyota says 19,099 vehicles are affected.

The company issued a statement which said the recall is “due to a fuel hose that may have been incorrectly manufactured”.

“The hose that connects the main fuel supply line to the engine may have become wrinkled,” the statement continues. “In some cases this could result in a small hole in the fuel hose which may allow fuel to leak.”

Toyota Australia media and external affairs manager Beck Angel says there is a risk of a fire, but says the chances of any such incident are very slim.

“There is a possibility of a fire hazard because it does involve fuel,” Angel says. “But because of the location of the fuel hose – it’s a long distance from any source of ignition – and the fact the hose has a protective coating, we feel the risk of a fire hazard is minimal.”

Toyota says there have been three reports of the leak in Australia, but no incidents have been recorded as a result.

The Japanese brand says it will send letters to owners asking them to contact their dealer to have their car’s fuel hose inspected for faults. The inspection is estimated to take 30 minutes, and if the hose needs to be replaced it should take approximately one hour and will be done free of charge.

Last week Toyota Australia controversially decided not to recall the RAV4 SUV over a suspension fault, despite more than 778,000 vehicles being affected in the US.

This recall is the company’s fourth since March this year, including one for subsidiary Daihatsu.

Just three reports and they do a recall. Impressive.

Yet a suspension bolt can work it self loose in the RAV4, Toyota dealers have seen at least 4 or 5 with loose bolts, and they don't recall it even though it could result in a suspension failure, and it has been recalled overseas for this very reason?

Go figure.

They should recall the Aurion Sportivo for being one of the ugliest pieces of vomit ever designed. Its hiddeous.

Its dangerous for other drivers who have to look at it.

But the Camry looks ok though, so I don't know how they managed to botch it so badly.

You must of missed the faulty steering linkage issues with the Hiluxs (resulted in criminal prosecution in Japan), head gaskets on V6s (recalled overseas but not here), Diesel injectors (recalled overseas but not here)

Not to mention the unintended acceleration incidents that they were fined by the NHTSA for, by not announcing a recall when they were legally obliged too.

If there is one thing that really needs to be recalled, its the licences of Toyota drivers.
