Default Keeping rego plates when buying dealer used (trade-in)?

How does one go about keeping the Current Number Plates when purchasing a car through a dealer with a trade-in?

Do you take the plates of the current (traded in) car when you make the purchase and then go to the registry office? Or should the plates be put in storage then transferred at a later date?

Both vehicles need to be in the same name if you want to do a swap so if the dealer is nice they can arrange for either the trade to be in their name or will allow you to transfer the new vehicle into your name and then swap plates. Alternatively you can just put the plates in storage then go get them back after purchase.

The easiest way is to just put them into storage. Then when you transfer the rego into your name do the plates at the same time.

I went through the same process a few years ago and it is a real pain to try and do it through the dealer.

Thanks for the info.

Sounds like the plates will go into storage, as the car is in the father-in-laws name. That way he can do what he wants with them.

Uggg...buying things can be a pain lol

At least the missus has given up her lancer for a nice mondeo sedan :-)
