Ninety to avoid cuts at Ford

FORD will save almost 100 jobs as it reduces the number of planned redundancies at its Geelong and Broadmeadows plants.

The company will cut 350 workers, instead of the 440 announced in July.

But the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union says Ford will still not get enough volunteers to fill the redundancies, with workers likely to be forced to leave.

Ford workers have until the end of next week to apply for a package.

Conditions will include more than four weeks' pay for each year of service.

Dave Smith, the union's national vehicle division secretary, said most workers wanted to stay at Ford.

"We don't expect that they will get anywhere near enough volunteers," he said.

"They were saying they would cut 440, but now we're expecting around 350."

Mr Smith said many workers would be talking with their family this week about their future.

Ford spokeswoman Sinead Phipps confirmed expressions of interests for redundancy would close next week.

"We do think there will be fewer than the number originally required," she said.

Ford received a $103 million bailout in January, partly funded by the federal and state governments.

The company will cut production to 148 cars a day next month, down from 209 a day.

The Ford Falcon's future has been assured until 2016.

I think they are using people from Ford to do the FPV work and not taking on the staff from fpv

They are moving the engine side of it to Geelong and the body stuff will be done at broady

Correct, although they will be/have taken on some "key" people from FPV, the labor requirement for FPV products coming out of Broadmeadows and Geelong will come from Ford's existing workers. This was explicitly stated when Ford announced it was taking over FPV.

It was simply a gross over estimation of the numbers they could chop. Once every area had gone through a review of the numbers they could drop and still have enough people to get the work done, they came up well short of the numbers Ford estimated.

And there would have been some to do the FPV work but that would have been minimal. Engine build only needs 6 people for instance.

Certainly a relief if jobs are saved, now hopefully a little luck on the sales side with better product mix...
