Running race fuels without a tune?

So im sitting at the smoko table talking crap like usual and the subject of dyno's and power figures comes up (im going for a dyno run on sunday)
An arguement is raised about running race fuels without a tune with the aim of gaining ~15rwkw

Im sceptical if it can be done but some of the guys think there would be certain race fuels available that i could run safely with my current tune and gain some good short term results.

Can i? And if i can what fuels can i try?
Im willing to give it a go but i'd have to order it in today from rocket industries so i can get it by sunday

May not be too much help to you ,but everytime ive had Jason put a new tune on the j3 chip he asks what fuel im going to use .

VP Racing MS109 may work. It claims 5% over unleaded but if your at the level of running drummed fuel most of the time you would be tuning on the fuel then running a power figure.

becuase using more octane than you need is like wizzing into the wind!

no way in hell you wouid get 15kw from fuel change, you also wont need over 98ron until you hit over 10.5 comp.

100 ron is good for almost 11.5 imo, 105 ron martini fuels ect are good for 12 comp as its what i use.

110 ron or avgas is good for 13 to 1 and higher.

What's your current afrs ? Martini Grand Prix 700 is 102 octane and is used as a replacement for 98 + octane booster . Won't change afrs much ( maybe 0.2-0.3 points ) and will make another 10-20 hp .

But it ain't cheap at $170 20l . You could try VP100 also , unleaded as well but similar results .

Basically it will allow more detonation protection , rather than noticeable hp .

Realistically you should tune for a specific fuel and stick with that fuel and tune .

Can't go past martini Grand Prix 1200 or VP109 for unleaded fuels . For best results . Expensive as they are both $180-$220 20l .

Higher compression will always make better use of the the high octane rating, but oxygenating fuels add chemical energy to make more power than pump fuels. Obviously tuning can optimise this by adding advance and fattening the mixture.

my understanding is unless your engine can make use of the race fuel with adjusted tune it won`t give you much power benefit, is that a fair comment?

Forced induction would be different though..

Some fuels have longer fuel burn and require more timing..
So just adding fuel could lower power levels..

Probs just be better off grabbing a bottle of octane booster and throwing it in before you leave home with bout 3/4 of a tank. by the time you get here should be nicely mixed in

But don'tcha know, by using Premium in a standard car you immediately increase horsepower by a factor of at least four, and if you use race fuel in a street car, it will immediately begin to produce eleventy-gajillion horsepower at the wheels...?

It will depend on the car, its ECU and the fuel density. Some NA cars will respond to better fuel in the tank as do some Forced Induction. But I don't think it be worth 15kw.

I did a test on my old WRX on the dyno between 3 different fuels. And as mentioned above by ebxr8240, one fuel made the car run richer thus it loosing power.

I used to run octane booster for some sprint events. I didn't notice any extra power but the higher octane made the car "safer".

Unless its tuned for it it probably won't do much. Needs extra timing to take advantage of it and the AFR's cleaned up.
