Here is a link to a story on the Storm in the U.S being nicknamed frankenstorm, or actually called hurricane Sandy. Now is there something I am missing? They are evacuating people, but the winds are only 120km/h and they expect 300mm of rain (which I realise is heaps) however over here in aus, 120km/h winds are pretty normal in storms and we don't go evacuating people. As I said maybe I am missing something or maybe the U.S are over reacting.

Not sure. But my brother is in new york and he's had flights to the west coast cancelled.

It's only equivalent to a Category 1 cyclone here but it's front would stretch from Melbourne to Cairns!
It's very wide and expected to meet up with other systems making it worse.
In saying that, I don't think their building standards are anything like ours either.

Cheers for that post chambo. Explains it a little better. I knew about the deaths in haiti etc, but I guess I put it down to the fact that they are a small island nation.

Yeah i agree, if it gets worse they will look the fool if they dont do anything.

I think it's relative. It also depends on the standard that the buildings have been built to in the first place, not to mention I think they're worried about the level of rain than the actual winds, though they wouldn't be pleasant.

Look at times here in Queensland when a small cyclone like a Cat 1 crosses the coast somewhere that "normally" doesn't get cyclones...houses will be unroofed and severe damage done over a wide area, when further north in the state, a Cat 1 is "just a big storm, no worries".

it`s hard to imagine a storm covering from melb to cairns, scary stuff, with a bit of luck it will fizzle out.

I live on the upper east side and while it was windy we never lost power or had any flooding. I work on 56th and 6th Ave which was one block from the crane which is dangling and all the streets around it are closed off. The news makes it appear so much worse but its just there hanging on and the streets are all closed off. I checked out central park today and a few trees were down but nothing serious and the clean up was well underway.

I know downtown was hit a lot worse but the images they show on the news of the areas I have been to hype it up a little too much. So unfortunately I had to go to work today :(

The tourist were loving the hanging crane!

I can't help but think if the U.S built their houses out of bricks, there would not be so much damage. Every single house in every photo I see is made of wodden boards with wooden roof tiles. Reminds me of the 3 little pigs.

New York City got hit hard initially by the storm but the trouble isn't over by a long shot.

There are plenty of subway tunnels still full of water that are going to be slow to get running. A lot of the subway infrastructure is 50 or even 100 years old and its been sitting submerged in salt water for days. I can't imagine what state electrical equipment will be in when they finally get the water out.

As old as some of that stuff is I wonder if large numbers of spare parts are going to be available

My mums cousin lives in New Jersey and their house suffered no damage at all, bar the power being out for 2 days. But she said the winds were the strongest she had ever felt/seen.

I just found out that a couple of my guy friends who are MICTs (paramedics) left to help out in NY. I don't know yet where in NY they are. Maybe Long Island, Staten Island, Brooklyn or Queens?

*sigh*..........my heart goes out to you and your family. I sure hope insurance will cover the damages and rebuild.

We're all safe and well, thanks. The scale of damage from this storm is mind bending.

Super Storm Sandy hit hard and the damages are so severe. Each day I hear more and more about the recovery, cleanup and rebuilding. I can't even imagine what it's like to go through something so devastating. I've made a donation to the Red Cross and I wish I could help out more.
