My thoughts on this:

It is a tragedy when a young lady, Jacintha Saldanha, who was employed as a nurse in a hospital appears to have taken her life after passing a prank call through to another nurse caring for a high profile patient.

My questions:

1) This is a hospital. Why did none of the trained professionals and admin staff notice that this lady was fragile?

2) How did the lady listen to 2Day FM in UK? Or did she see/hear this in the UK media, the same media who are now scrambling for high ground and blaming the presenters.

3) All of these death threats etc. from outraged do-gooders. The presenters had no malice or evil intent with the call, the do-gooders are creating the same situation for the presenters but ARE doing it with malice and evil intent. If one or both of the presenters suffer harm because of this is that fair? Or should the do-gooders then be hounded.

4) Why do radio stations do prank calls if EVERYONE thinks they are wrong and dangerous and should be banned? After all the ratings would be less than zero and high profile advertisers like Coles and Telstra would have withdrawn their money years ago.

My wife is a Prep teacher. The kids do all sorts of silly things but one thing never changes, if an accident happens they all go into a frenzy blaming someone else, anyone else, just to take any focus off them. Little kids are all instinct and very little thinking. Some things don't change as you get older.

So to sum up:

Who is to blame for this tragedy?

I AM TO BLAME FOR THIS TRAGEDY.

I listen to the radio and enjoy it.
I laugh at presenters antics.
I shop at Coles and use Telstra.
I watch the media going bezerk on "A current today sun-minutes".
I talk about it on the internet.
I watch clips on youtube.

And I suspect there may be a few more people who do the same........

What I do not do is grab a pitchfork and join a lynch party to destroy the lives of two young people just so I can feel better about myself and pretend that some form of revenge might bring Jacintha Saldanha back to life or make her family forget how this tragic event robbed them of her.

Not that I'm judging, but this is one of the best discussion points I've read on this. I agree 100% and would even go further to say that the media that blew up a storm about a prank call (that perhaps 500,000 people in Sydney heard live and probably all laughed at) are more responsible for the subsequent actions than those that did the prank.

The Serbian ambassador to NATO has jumped to his death from a multi-story carpark at Brussels Airport, local sources say.


On Wednesday, Serbia’s foreign ministry said Branislav Milinkovic, 52, had “died tragically” in the Belgium capital.

"We were absolutely shocked yesterday when we heard. We are deeply saddened at this loss. The ambassador was deeply respected here and very well liked. He did a very professional job,” NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs, James Appathurai said.

Serbia's Prime Minister Ivica Dacic also said, "Belgian police are investigating, but it's obviously a suicide. It's hard to figure out the motives or causes."


Serbian reporters said on Tuesday night, Milinkovic suddenly stepped over the side of a garage platform and jumped.

The incident took place after Milinkovic had returned to the carpark from the international airport where he met Serbian Deputy Foreign Minister Zoran Vujic.

Vujic and other Serbian delegates were reportedly near Milinkovic at the time of his death.

By all reports they were talking and he just walked to the edge and jumped off....
No apparent reason..

Quite a few yrs ago, a friend of the family lost their son when he suicided because he was getting a divorce and his wife was going to 100% custody. No warning... no one saw it coming.

I know of one other who did it at his workplace and was found by his co-workers one morning... they didnt see it coming.

The warning signs may or may not present themselves at all, or be apparent to some people at all or the person may just be hiding it very well..

Im not suggesting we all treat people like they are ready to do something bad to themselves, as there is just no real way of knowing. Heaven help us if we stop performing practical jokes on each other, but if someone takes it badly, be nice enough to say sorry when thing settle down.

I think we may be missing the bigger picture here.

I doubt this poor woman chose to end her life because of the hype behind the prank call.
I believe she would have felt a huge sense of failure and embarassment to her family and to the beautiful woman which she failed to protect.

Lets not forget that the woman at the centre of this prank is married to a man who watched his own mother persecuted throughout her adult life by tabloid media to the point where it led to her own untimely death.

They arent all psyciatric nurses... or doctors.... why would they pick up on someone who is having issues moreso then anyone else?

We haven’t had a royal scandal for a while, the UK media must be loving this and in my opinion are nothing short of bottom feeders, some, when it comes to ethics, would make a drug addicted prostitute look like Mother Teresa yet people still believe the crap they come up with. Why?

I am choosing not to watch any news on this story because I’m just sick to death of it (no pun intended).

How many tragic deaths have occurred in the world over the last week and how many have we heard about? Well, I for one am sick of hearing about this one.

I’m sick of the do gooders, many here on AFF, as well as the general media condemning these two radio presenters. FFS, what does everyone want the two kids to do, neck themselves so they can prove that they are sorry?

I’m not on bookface and couldn’t give a flying **** for the idiotic views that people have on it but why does bookface hold so much weight?

Yes, it’s sad. No, they didn’t mean to cause harm. It was a ******* prank. I listen to Merrick and The Highway Patrol, they do prank calls all the time. Does that make them bad? Better lock them up in case someone decides to end it all because they were humiliated on radio.

While you do gooders are at it, you’d better tell The Onion that they can’t be funny and can only report “real” news in case another Chinese news editor mistakenly reports another story on Kim Jong-Un as fact instead of satire. The Chinese probably executed him over that but were The Onion responsible?

And as for the likes of Coles, ask a few people in the bush about how many farmers have committed suicide because of their pig headed and arrogant attitudes to farming practices and business. And don’t forget about the thousands of “family friendly” poker machines they own. How many suicides have they been responsible for? Then they try and claim the moral high ground. I think idiots should be banned for saying stupid things like this.

There must have litterally millions of harmless prank calls made, yet one slips through to someone who must have serious issues and we need to ban them.

Fair point, however, do you know many people who work in hospitals?

Thirteen years ago I was going out with a gynaecologist and some of the stunts they pulled on each other at times even surprised me. My missus’ brother is a dermatologist and I can assure you that he has a sense of humour, along with many of his colleagues. I’m sure that you can read between the lines here.

My take on this is that the prank didn't tip her over the edge, but probable internal hospital reaction from the incident from management in damage control may be a factor.

I have resisted responding to this thread before it was closed for a short while and then since it was reopened. Not one post has it been mentioned or suggested that the fault lay well and truly at the feet of the hospital. You have the future Kings wife (in my opinion Chuck 'll never see the throne) staying in your hospital and you have absolutely no protocols in place for a telephone enquiry
