Default Safe drivers rewarded with discount

Quote:
Safe drivers rewarded with discount
Saturday Dec 24 11:53 AEDT

Victorian drivers who avoid committing any traffic offences for three years will receive a discount when they renew their licences.

The Victorian government plans to reward safe drivers with a 25 per cent discount on their licence fees from January 1, cutting $10.50 off the cost of a three-year licence, and $35.60 from a 10-year licence.

The plan, which the government estimates about 300,000 of the state's 3.5 million drivers will qualify for, will cost $35 million over four years, the Herald Sun reports.

Transport Minister Peter Batchelor said the program would reward motorists who were consistently conscious of road safety.

advertisement
"It is really important at this time of year because of the large number of people who are involved in crashes over the holiday period," he told the Herald Sun.
Anyone else see an issue here? Only 300,000 of 3,500,000 drivers will qualify? Meaning 3,200,000 have been booked for something in the last 3 years. That actually means that the government has deemed that 92% of all the states drivers have broken the law and driven in an illegal manner. WTF?? 92%?? Thats stunning. That actually shows me that its not the drivers, its the laws! If 92% of all drivers are breaking the laws, the laws are obviously WAY over the top. There is no way that, in any other situation, 92% of the entire populate of adults could break the law and not have the law repealed or at least ignored.
Bracks has just shown how committed to "vehicle" revenue his government is. Its not a stealth tax, its way to out in the open for that!

92% of all drivers are insane, crazy, speed obsessed, child killing lunatics. Yeah, right. And speed camera's save lives, easter bunny is real and Paul Morris is an A class driver!

lol $10 for a 3 year licence and $35 for a 10 year licence? Why do they bother?

Discount on registration would be better. the TAC premium (mandatory) is about $350. Lower that for "safe drivers" would be a much better idea.

The tried this in NSW some years ago. Silver licenses etc, another piece of Govt fluff to hide the fact that your tax dollars are not being spent for the purposes they were intended.

The whole scheme dissapeared without a trace...

Gee, I wonder if this scheme will be around in 2014 when I get to renew my licence?

I wonder if Bracks can dodge a bullet that long?

Mine's due for renewal in August - and no speeding fines since 2001, so looks like I'll get it.

Its shameful riduculous PR exercise at best just as bad as speed cameras.

Unless its linked to km driven on the roads what does it mean.

It means I haven't driven for three years or only around my property and into town once a month.

JOKE PR JOKE if you ask me.

Who is honestly going to change their driving behaviour to get a discount.

Just like speed cameras its just randomn revenur raising.

Anyone really want to do something about road safety it can be done easily enough by looking into all the small accident insurance claims and getting something done about drivers who have small accidents before they have big ones. forced retraining a fine that would do more than give the budget a bluebird.

I'm glad my licence is up for renewal on 30th of December - my birthday. I guess $10 is worth SFA anyway though.

92% lol loving this new reward system wonder how much money they are gunna save..

honestly instead of rewarding the should penalise bad drivers
they'll make a buck then wouldnt they, abit like insurance etc

hahahaha gold.

however, the idea of rewarding drivers is a step in the right direction. but, with Victorias brutal fine system, and a reward of only $10.50 for a 3 year licence (a very impressive saving of $3.50 per annum on your licence fees) this scheme falls so far short that it is completely laughable. the best thing Victtorians could do is dump Bracks at the next election for someone who is going to exercise a much smarte approach to road safety. just dont count on any cuts in fines though, whoever is in charge of teh state...no government likes to give up a lucrative revenue stream...

not that i cold get this discount as you would have to not drive for three years in vic to not get a ticket as i do about 2,000 ks a week its hard to not creep over the limit and get caught by the cash registers (speed cameras )

dosnt matter i paid my 10 year one 8 months ago so i can practice for the next nine years !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found it quite funny when I saw that in the paper. The government also said that the 92% of non-eligible drivers should not be disappointed that they will miss out on this and that it would encourage them to do the right thing. As if?

8% is a very small number. Imagine how many police officers, politicians and government road authority workers are in the 92%.

you gotta take into account that Victorian speed camera's book you for 2 and 3klms over the limit.

my dad is/was a national fleet manager. and he was getting infringement notices from victorian camera's 2 and 3 km/h over the limit. its ridiculous.

That was Casper's point I think, that these infringements occur and they shouldn't.

I'd rather see the discount apply to registration. Also the discount should be worth it!

Maybe drivers will drive better then?

Rego is tipped to increase to pay for the new Geelong base for the TAC. Typical government and corporation logic - discount one thing and raise another.

Yes - surely it's time they opened their eyes and realise that money grows on trees. Moving on....

The revenue raising thrust upon the citizens of victoria does seem outrageous. Particularly when considering that Vic has the second lowest road toll (per capita) after the ACT (which surely doesnt count??). Maybe this means the TAC is being effective??? Altho you guys still over the national target per capita (whatever that is worth...)
