just wondering what gauge steel is best to use for welding sill and subframe repairs?
and what about panels such as doors etc? TB |

i believe the ideal gauge is the same as what you are repairing.

I got my zinc plated sheet steel from midalia steel in welshpool,give them a buzz and see what sizes they have,i cant remember what size i got.
I just used a piece to patch my inner sill and it worked pretty good. Just went out to the shed and measured my steel and its between .9 and 1mm(my eyes struggling to read the verniers) I agree with what was said about using as close a guage to what you are welding,i think factory sheetmetal is between .6 and 1mm. thanks guys.
it obviously makes sense to replace like for like, but i dont have a set of callipers. or a knowledge of whats standard. |

Outer panels 1mm. Some inner sills etc are thicker like 1.2mm, some are 1.6mm

in an aid to measuring your sheet metal or stuff in general , you can get very cheap electronic calipers these days, very handy from most tool places for about 20 odd buks.

16 gauge=1.6mm,18 gauge=1.2mm,20 gauge=1.0mm
All are ok, depends on application,eg. Thinner the metal easier to work.
