The Hindustan Ambassador is a car manufactured by Hindustan Motors of India. It has been in production since 1958 with few improvements or changes and is based on the Morris Oxford III model, first made by the Morris Motors Limited at Cowley, Oxford in the United Kingdom from 1956 to 1959. Sale of Ambassador taxis had been banned since April 1, 2011, a year after BS IV norms were rolled out in 11 Indian cities, including Kolkata. At present the company is in an extremely challenging situation with plummeting sales and loss of INR299.6 million (US$5.5 million)in 2011-12. The company could only sell around 2,500 cars in 2011.

Despite its British origins, the Ambassador is considered as a definitive Indian car and is fondly called "The king of Indian roads".[citation needed] The automobile is manufactured by Hindustan Motors at its Uttarpara plant[1] near Kolkata, West Bengal. Some prominent Indian politicians, such as Sonia Gandhi, use the Hindustan Ambassador.[2]

Yes , the Simca Aronde was a good thing and I saw many race at Caversham against the Peugeot of the day however the Vedette looked good but was a disaster in Australia as the cooling system just couldn't cope and the Renaults of the day were about as reliable as Fiats and the Hippies bought the 2CV Citroens and School teachers and Professors bought the DS series .

Parts are hard work for old British stuff. Had a 72 Hillman Hunter Royal here too hard to get suspension stuff.

Still I would love a P6 Rover 3500 V8. Aluminium panels, inboard discs, IRS in the early 60s pretty space age stuff.

I think the last British cars to be sold here would have been the Cortina and Escort in 1981.

collection of Prince of Darkness jokes
The Lucas Electric motto: "Get home before dark."

Lucas denies having invented darkness. But they still claim "sudden, unexpected darkness."

Lucas--inventor of the first intermittent wiper.

Lucas--inventor of the self-dimming headlamp.

The three-position Lucas switch--DIM, FLICKER and OFF. The other three switch settings--SMOKE, SMOLDER and IGNITE.

The original anti-theft devices--Lucas Electric products.

"I've had a Lucas pacemaker for years and have never experienced any prob...

If Lucas made guns, wars would not start either.

Did you hear about the Lucas powered torpedo? It sank.

It's not true that Lucas, in 1947, tried to get Parliament to repeal Ohm's Law. They withdrew their efforts when they met too much resistance.

Did you hear the one about the guy that peeked into a Land Rover and asked the owner "How can you tell one switch from another at night, since they all look the same?" "He replied, it doesn't matter which one you use, nothing happens!"

Back in the '70s Lucas decided to diversify its product line and began manufacturing vacuum cleaners. It was the only product they offered which didn't suck.

Quality Assurance phoned and advised the Engineering guy that they had trouble with his design shorting out. So he made the wires longer.

Why do the English drink warm beer? Lucas makes the refrigerators.

Alexander Graham Bell invented the Telephone.
Thomas Edison invented the Light Bulb.
Joseph Lucas invented the Short Circuit.

Recommended procedure before taking on a repair of Lucas equipment: check the position of the stars, kill a chicken and walk three times sunwise around your car chanting: "Oh mighty Prince of Darkness protect your unworthy servant."

My pop has an old Vauxhall Chevette he's owned since new. After my nanna had a stack in it on Aukland bridge pop took it off the road and stuffed a 4.4 litre V8 out of a P76 Leyland in it and has been rallying it for almost 3 decades. Heres a pic of it from 1984.

Burnout didn't say it was an Austin but I guess he could have identified it for those who haven't had the "experience" of British car ownership!
